I have this filter assembly on my homemade backhoe: Nortrac Hydraulic Return Filter Assembly — 20 GPM | Hydraulic Accessories| Northern Tool + Equipment
I haven't changed the filter yet but I figure it's time. The filter is on the return line and sits a bit lower than the tank. According to Northern Tool there isn't a check valve in the assembly. How much fluid should I expect to lose when changing the filter? Should I also change the fluid at the same time (or at least all that I could drain) or is it OK to keep using the old fluid and just replace whatever I may lose in the process of changing the filter?
