Stole Sawyer Robs idea with his firewood pallets and managed to finally get one filled up and the Ol MX did manage to pick it up probably a little less than a 1/2 cord there.

2WD! Pretty rare around these parts (this forum), but it sounds like it's not a hindrance for you.
Probably saves enough coin to buy a car....well, not really...
Sure looks nice. Obviously ballast is even more important with 2wd, but still very functional.

I just "borrowed" Rob's idea and built 2 of them. I spent more than I had hoped on ($80) each and that's buying r/s Hemlock 2x4 -8's for only $2.05. I did "run up" the cost using those good GRK screws instead of nails, hoping to keep them sturdy for years.
This was my initial fill up & wanted to see how they stacked. They are 5'x6' and about 3'6" tall but only have about 91 cu/ft of wood with a space for air flow between the 2 rows. If I convert to this, I'm going to need at least a dozen

Looking good Rusty! But I'm struggling though to see how you have $80 in each... did you have to pay for the pallets?
That's where I'm at right now mine don't cost anywhere near 80$ a piece but it's still a pretty decent investment for something I'm unsure of how many years it'll last. If they hold up 5 years or so I'm fine but every time I've used pallets for firewood they rotted within a year or two. Me too. Back when 4x4 wasn't widely available I think we learned how to work with what we had, and got by nicely. But 4x4 is sure an improvement

I was thinking of using regular pallets with side posts nailed on, then setting 4x4s under to keep the pallet off the ground. Set a few of those side by side, and put an old sheet of metal roofing on top.

Me too! I built the whole thing, no free pallets involved. I cut my wood at 26" and that just does not work with the pallet's that I come across for free. The 2x4's 8'- $2.05 10'- $3.33 12' $4 then there's 2-12' pt and a $35 box of screws, and that doesn't count the other screw's I had and several tubes of const. glue also on hand. All the lumber was cut in half and virtually zero waste. The Hemlock seem's to be pretty durable outside, I have a sawbuck that's been outside for about 7-8 years now with no trouble, and with a cover on these box's they will get no direct rain. I'm telling myself that I should get 10 years use at least.
I saw a member's alternate design on another forum that also involves no pallets. It really is a simple design and should be $20-30, it's only a single row but I can live with that for a $50 savings. I'll build a couple of these to see how I like them.

Right now I'm thinking 8' wide x 6' tall. That will give me 104 cu/ft. (with 26" splits) I just worry how steady it will be.

Yes, the design is so simple it makes me feel foolish with my complicated expensive "pallets". Maybe I should have worked for the govt.:laughing:
