I did my 50 hr service and realized the shop sent me the wrong hydraulic filter, so I did the engine and the HST filter (gorilla-tightened! It took a chain strap wrench and a 3' 2x4 lever to loosen it...) previously. Once I got the right hydraulic filter today, I replaced it and figured I would video the process using the vacuum trick (not created by me) for those who are curious. Yes I know the manual doesn't say to replace the hydraulic filter at 50 hrs, but it does for the others. I figured it was cheap insurance. So here is the video. It doesn't show final tightening and topping off the fluid, but you should get the idea of the important parts I am trying to show. Not much to it...but sometimes a video really helps get the point across.

Great idea

Thanks. Great contribution to all TBN users that are interested in doing their own filter changes without losing so much fluid.
Appreciate people that will share their experience and with video is even better.:drink:

All I got was a slide show on how to use a Stihl.

That is how I did mine , but I wasn't as calm as you in the video when I did it. I thought the filter would not make it pass my subframe but it did. I was worried the vac was sucking up fluid but it wasn't
Good video, thanks for sharing it .

How can you possibly only have 50 hrs?, I can't believe I have almost 100 hrs ? I don't even remember using the tractor that much.:

Good idea.
I like to put hour when filter was change on new filter...50,100, etc. for reminder.

Thanks for posting. I am getting ready to do 600hr service on my L3830 and I am going to use the vacuum trick.

Thanks, guys, just trying to help others out a bit. I tried to embed the video from photobucket, but could not make that happen no matter how many ways I tried it. Must be missing something... But the link should work. I just tried it again and it went right to the video.

I actually have about 60 hrs (since Memorial day last year, when I bought it). I racked up a lot in the first 2 months and then it tapered off a lot until later in the fall and then winter for snow plowing. With building the house, I haven't had a lot of time to be as **** about the tractor maintenance as I like, but I'm probably still better off than most out there.

As for calm, I have done it before on my old L3130 so I know it works, and I did it on the HST filter last week on this one, so once again, I know it works. Besides, if something went wrong, I wouldn't have published the video  Fluid won't get sucked up as you would need a MASSIVE vacuum to make that happen. No shop vac is going to do that unless the fluid level is right about up to where the vacuum port it. Besides, you are just evacuating/reducing air space, not creating a flow. No real drive for the fluid to climb all that much. I also keep a spreadsheet with all my service info so I can refer back to it as needed. Writing the hours the filter was changed at on it is a very good idea too. I've seen that done before and it is pretty easy to do and see it every time you look at the end of the filter.

Thanks for posting the video! I mentioned this YEARS ago and people said it would not work. They said using a cork was easier....no way!
But, I did say a scantily clad female assistant was needed!!

IMG_20130922_150416_989.jpgI didn't use a vacuum the last time I changed the hydraulic and hydrostatic filters on the Kioti. I just stopped up the breather hole with a screw. I changed out the hydraulic filter at my leisure and lost maybe 1 or possibly 2 ounces of fluid and what ever was inside the filter of course. the fluid did not rush out the hole because there is no air that can get in from the top side of the tank with the breather hole stopped up. It creates it's own vacuum. The hydraulic system is airtight except for the breather hole. I had used the vacuum cleaner "trick" before with success, but I lost less fluid this way than with the vacuum cleaner method.

I also prefer to use a plug or cork.

I can't imagine that the suction & turbulence from the vacuum method doesn't risk pulling some of the dirt or metal filings out the filter or off of the strainer, & put it back in suspension with the oil.

Good point , I see what you mean, I watched the video again and while he pulled the filter off it did seem like there was a lot of suction there and may pull from the filter. That vac may be a little too strong. When I used the mightyvac with a 1/4 inch hose there was no suction noise down at the filter. That I remember anyway.

I like the plug idea. Where did you buy it?

Hardware stores. They come in different sizes in rubber or cork and some are tapered. I have one........somewhere.:)

If you "plug" up the other end. the air in end, you will not have to mess around with rapidly putting in a cork as without air going into the tank no (or very little) fluid will come out of the filter hole. All you need to do is put a screw in the air vent hole of the rubber crooked stopper. On Kubota's I believe most of them are under the seat. Do not forget to take the screw out when you are done. It sure worked for me on my last filter change.
