field work/leveling a little more

Have been looking at a blanket harrow but wonder if right for my property. Have 5 acres with approximately half of that roughly leveled. Soil is clay based, and if your lucky feet before you hit basalt if unlucky inches and I have some of each. The field was planted in field grass 6 years ago. Nothing but mowing done since. The blanket harrows main problem as I see it is storage and transporting. Wondering if any other ideas and or equipment to look at. Happy to say I have a Kubota L3010 with just 28 hours to assist me in my efforts. Any help or ideas appreciated

It's not really clear what you want to do, from your post. If you want to do some serious leveling, it is hard to beat a box blade. However, you would have to reseed afterwards. If you are just interested in breaking up the surface a little, there are rotary harrows available that are easier to transport and store (see attached photo). The spider rotary harrow is available in 6 and 8 foot widths from Country Manufacturing or WikCo.com. It would scratch up the surface so you could drag it with something like a railroad tie or 6x6 to smooth things out. Probably still would require some reseeding.

Of course, another option is a tiller -- might have some fun where the basalt is only inches below the surface /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.

Tell us a little more exactly what you have in mind and what your future uses might be. You may want to rent something if you won't have continuing use for it later.
