I would like to get to the back of a field occasionally without damaging much crop and I recall the mopeds, or motorized bicycles of my 1950's youth. I searched the web only to find an eclectic mix of Chinese made stuff that I don't trust.

Anyone know of a kit to put a small gas motor on a typical bicycle or have any other ideas how to make one?

If you look around, you may still find some of the '70s and '80s Honda mopeds around. Also, Yamaha and a couple of other manufacturers make/made a scooter that had some offroad ability (ie - oversized and kinda knobby tires). The Yamaha was called a Zuma. I know I've seen something like that at PepBoys, but then you are back to the Chinese-made stuff if that is an issue.

I think you'd be much happier with a used motorcycle. A bicycle's wheels and frame just are not made to take off road service. When I was a newsboy I used to tear up bicycles just with the added weight of my newspapers.

I'd look around for a small trail bike with knobby tires and low gearing.

I would strongly suggest an older Honda motorcycle. I have a CT70, also known as a Trail 70, for the same type of use. Its a blast to ride and it will go through pretty much anything including snow. I plan on adding a hitch to pull a small cart this Summer.

Depending on your size, one of these or the larger CT90 would be a great machine. It might take some looking to find one in really good shape, but its pretty hard to actually kill one of these. They're dead easy to work on and Honda still supplies parts.

Get a ROKON! :D

These things are awesome, 2wd drive large off-road tires and can float for river forging.

yes, the weakness of a motorized bike is the absence of shocks, plus narrow tires not to mention that the typical motor add on is probably geared for travel on a paved street.
