Have you looked at prices for what should be "cheap" Jeep's lately? even old squarekee's aren't cheap anymore unless you stumble on someone that hasn't looked on craigslist or facebook marketplace in half a decade... Anymore you have to be in the right place at the right time or know how to fix something to get a good deal...

pretty much goes for ALL used vehicles

Without a door, what kept you from falling out, bouncing through the rough areas?

I've been eyeing FB and CL for cheap field "cars" for awhile. Anything decent and running, is a grand at least.

No seatbelt so just hang on to the steering wheel. I tried scaring my little brother one day by driving too close to a pond and got sucked into the mud. Had to get out the other door and walk home.

Thats whats great about older Jeeps. Take doors off and throw them in a corner. Put a little chain with a clip across opening if you’re a fraidy cat

Jump in and out quickly. Hit the road and do 55 if needed. Heat and maybe AC, good seats. 1/2 the price of a side by side.

I never understood the popularity of the side-by-sides when beater Jeeps were plentiful, and you could plate it for a streetable if needed. Originally, the side-by-sides weren’t too expensive. But now, yikes!

I also always said it for the price of a side by side I would buy a Jeep any day instead, put big tires on, a lift and a winch and you can go on the road and further then any side by side can go in the mud.

I am surprised how tightly the Durango corners. I have one trail section, where a bridge over a creek and a culvert over a deep ditch, are quite close.

I couldn’t come close to making that turn, with my old standard cab, 8 ft bed Silverado pickup let alone my newer one with an extended cab. That always forced me to take the long route back to the shooting range.

The Durango makes that tight turn, and stays on the narrow culvert, with no trouble. It will be a lot handier for target practice, and it will be great not having to worry about paint scratches.

I was 13 when I dragged home my first field car. $45. I had been driving farm equipment since I was way too young but I was getting an eye for cars.
Best place to learn is in an open field. Nothing to hit or damage. You can really get the feel for acceleration, braking handling and have a blast doing it.
My favorite was driving in the wheat field after harvest and all the straw was baled and taken in. The stubble was slick as snot. You hit 50-55mph and turn the wheel hard and you go end for end like on ice. The front wheels throwing up a rooster tail plume of soil past the door window.
Practiced parallel parking between bales of hay. No fear if you hit anything.
Chased coyotes a few times.
There was a stream valley that I used to love racing out of onto the level field. I swear the car caught some air more than a few times. Didn't do the front end much good slamming down. But it was only $45.
In the end the contractor who had cleared some 10 acres of bush for the old man had the last laugh.
By this time the car didn't run and was abandoned in the back field.
The guy mentioned it to my father and got the story. He said he had always wanted to drive over a car with his D8. Pa said go ahead. You never saw such a huge smile on a 40 something guys face.
It was cool to watch.
I ended up going to High School with his son that fall and the kid was bragging about it. Was he ever surprised when I told him that it had been my car his old man had run over.
That was the first of many death traps as my mother called them.
And kids now think they're having fun in front of a screen. Mind you I never got to drag a hooker into the car and beat her like in the videos.
Probably better that way.

Our field vehicle. 2 years out of inspection. No longer passes. Modern braking system disabled to old school. Can't farm plate it due to PA not allowing SW registered vehicles but treat it as such. Month ago found a large chunk of metal where I previously drove. Still haven't checked to see exactly what it was. Still drives great.

Years ago we had a neighbor that always had a newer Mercedes diesel sedan. Doubled as his field car ! We had been having issues with thieves at night and dad told our loader operator to dig a 'tank trap' ditch to block the old access road that they snuck in on. No sooner did the ditch get finished that our neighbor stopped by and blasted over this impassable road block ! Pretty sure he got air on all four ! The old Dutchman , cigar still going , blurted out one word : Vatthegoddamhellboys ze road is a little rough ! Dad had the loader go back and ditch it a bit deeper !

Had a Suzuki Samurai for a field car but sold it. Our side by side is just as good and it too has a winch on the front.

I learned to drive with my brother and friend in 2 field worthy 1960ish VW Beetles. There was a creek crossing in the big field that we would hit at high speed and go sailing across on the belly pan never touching the center of the creek. Trails through the woods were fun too. Unmodified those little cars would go nearly everywhere.
