I need some advice or opinions on how I should apply my fertilizer before no-tilling a few acres of oats. I am getting the no till drill from the local conservation district and its a new piece of property that I got permission to hunt. My question is if I should use the drill to apply the fertilizer before planting, broadcast it, or mix it in with the seed when I plant. The ground hasn't been tilled in many many years as far as I can tell and I'm afraid I might need to drag harrow the residue prior to attempting to drill. I'm hoping the coulters on the drill will allow enough down pressure to get a good planting. So what do you think about the method of fertilizer application?
The fields I'm planting were hayfields at one time.
