The points about the wheels and angling the posts so that the gate opens on its own are good ones.

Telephone poles. Hmmmm.

Thanks...

cowboydoc,

I was wondering how you got that 30' telephone pole up 16'?
Sure sounds like a good set up.

Mark,
I actually cut the poles off at 22'. I put 6' in the ground and 16' above the ground. The same time I put in my pole barn I had the guy that dug the holes for that, with a 14" 8' auger. To stand the poles up I used my skidsteer. Then to put the pole on top of them i rigged a pulley up to each side and pulled one side up and had a friend hold that one and then went to the other side and pulled that one up. I had notched out the bottom so they sat right on top really nice and then I put the spikes in and put the steel straps on. I also put my trusses up on the pole barn and house with the skidsteer. I made a piece that I put on the skidder that I can clamp the truss on and then lift it up. Worked really good. Anymore questions just give a holler, be glad to help. I just bought another 57 acres yesterday so it looks like more work ahead!

Congratulations on the land purchase !/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

How do you go about finding the "telephone" poles? I put that in quotes because telephone/power line poles are treated, straight etc, as opposed to a felled tree with its branches nocked off /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

p.s. If you tell me you got them from your local phone company I'm gonna really be embarassed - I work for mine /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

I do indeed get them from my local telephone company.
They are glad to get rid of them and even offered to bring them to me!
Of course these are the used poles, not cosmetically perfect, lots of nails, spikes etc.

Richard,

Thanks for letting me know how you set your gate poles. Now will you call my wife and explain why I need a skidsteer in addition to my tractor?/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Congrats on the new land. Are you planning on expanding your cattle herd?

markcg2000,

I get poles from the local power company. I have a friend that runs the yard and a lot of the poles that get replaced end up in the there. They used to put little glass viles filled with nasty stuff in the base of the pole to stop decay, one by one they are replacing the poles.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the congrats. Acutally some of my patients are linemen and when they put in new ones they just drop them by the house for me and pick up a couple half racks!

Hi Mark,
Actually I need the farm ground to raise some more hay and corn to feed the critters. I tell you though the way cattle prices are right now I'm going to make a profit this year and my tax man is not going to be happy so had to do something with the money.
