Fence Row Etiquette

Maybe he likes the brushy fence line for the privacy and or noise buffer it provides. it provides.

The property on the other side is row cropped, corn this year. This area is 30-50 yards wide, away from the fence on his side. Some of the trees are really large, some of the larger limbs hang over at least 25'. It's going to be quite a job to trim those branches back.

So have you actually talked with this neighbor? See if he will help you clear his fence line? If not, offer to do it yourself.

I haven't talked to him. He doesn't live here. I will talk to him about it at some point, I am just trying to find out what the right thing to do is.

I think the practical answer depends on your relationship with the eastern neighbor and what the law allows where you live.

One potential issue I see is putting branches back onto his side after they fall on your side by force of nature.

Another issue is your neighbor might not like it if branches are trimmed and then put back on his side creating a job for him that he hadn't planned on.

If you want to ID the property line even when dealing with a deteriorating fence, it's pretty easy to drive some extra T posts as visible markers.

I'll start adding to my burn pile, though I doubt anyone could tell where the stuff came from considering how much is already on his side.

I have a similar situation and I just started clearing 30' of tumbleweed and such on the other side... actually put a gate in for access when I replaced the fence. Neighbor comes out every 2-5 yrs, saw what I had done for wildfire control and asked me if I would mow his property annually, so we made a deal and now I get paid to keep it as I like it.
Talk to your neighbor. It can be very productive

I've got a Ventrac so it would be easy for me to mow it but it's so overgrown with trees I wouldn't be able to get thru the area. I probably didn't describe it very well. Maybe I should post a few pics.

You're most likely allowed to trim anything that hangs over your property line right up to the heavens. But as others have said, you're also most likely not allowed to put the trimmings on his property.

We've got a fence line buried in the woods on our property. I know the owner on the other side. He's a farmer and does not want to bother with a lane along the fence. It's all woods and deep, thick brush back there. He just wants it left wild. Doesn't bother me in the least. I keep a trail on my side and just move anything that's in the way off to the side, or just move the trail around it.
