Members: am hauling creek rock (from pile) w/'FELs on 7040 4wd. being dense material, as I approach for the bucketfull (low 1st gear 4wd), the tractor comes to a stop and the front wheels spin a bit as I raise the FELS. I'll immediately depress the clutch, etc. and proceed. A K tech informed me this will not put excessive stress on powertrain/ clutch, ect. and he mentioned to use the differential lock in that sit. I thought it was only for rear axle use? any feedback on the effect on tractor & diff lock use ? don't want to press the machinery, but need to get 'er done.....thanks in advance .bb

The diff lock only operates on the rear axle. The tech must figure that if you are in the situation where your front wheels are spinning, there is a chance one of your rears is spinning, too. You would maximize your available traction by at least locking the rears together, paddling you through the muck a little better.

I have heard that it is not good to press the diff lock WHILE you have the rear wheels spinning at different speeds...stop your wheels, engage the diff lock, then start again. Used as such, that is what it was meant for.

Because of the way the diff lock locks the 2 diffs, using a pin, I will only use the diff lock to get me out of a jamb. Not for everyday use. On a bigger tractor it might not be a problem.
