Hi all. got a question for you lumberjacks. I have a MS310 with the recommended 20" bar. I very occasionally need to down some pretty big trees. Currently I have a big black locust next to our cabin and I need it down. It's leaning in a good direction away from the building but it will take some doing with the 20" bar. A 24" bar is listed as the max for this saw. Wondering if anyone has used the bigger bar with this chainsaw and whether this saw would be up to the occasional felling job for a big tree. A bigger ~ 90 cc saw cost is prohibitive for the occasional use I would get for it. The locust is about 40" diameter. Looking for your comments. Thanks.

The make skip tooth chains, where only every other tooth cuts. Maybe that with a big bar.

Don't have a 310 but my 660's greatly benefited from a muffler mod. If the 310 will benefit from a muffler mod I'd expect it to easily handle a 28" bar.
I've a 62CC John Deere which I've used for milling with a 28" bar. Just make sure your oiler will provide enough oil.

Every late model Stihl benefits from a muffler mod far as I'm concerned. Hog 'em out and let 'em run.... Better yet, get an expansion chamber and really make them run....lol

i bought an MS310 when they first came out. Fitted it with the 24" bar and laterr picked up a 20" for it. The saw with 24" worked just fine for felling bigger trees up to about 36". Even fell some locusts that were well over bar lenght diameter with no objections from it. I did use skip tooth chain though...as I still do on all my saws included 20" bars. I still have the 310-but he is old and very tired. I still use it occasionally around the farm stead just for old times sake.
