The members of this forum have offered many bits of advice which have benefited me great; I thank you all for that. I come again to dip into the well of knowledge. I am trading in my 2210 w/ FEL for a 790 w/FEL. I look forward to the manual trans. and the heavier frame. I have used the FEL on the 2210 to do many tasks around the house and barn and am wondering what the addition of a toothbar would do for me. Thanks in advance for your advice.

If you are mostly loading manure, gravel or sand, then the toothbar is not needed.
But if you excavate, clear land then the toothbar is great as you end up with like 1/3 of a hoe as the loader is most aggressive with teeth.

Problem is, example, loading manure from a barn floor becomes practically impossible and even loading sand will result in a messy lawn.
Also with teeth you loose 'backgrading' capabilities.

Certainly a remouvable tooth bar is a desirable option as you then have the best of both worlds.

Remouval is a snap, 2 bolts!
Besides you would not be remouving/installing every day.
Mind you installation sometimes calls for a sledge to 'persuade' the bar alignment, but again, manageble.

I hope you like the manual shift as much as you did the hydro.

If one plans on just using the loader as a loader (moving fresh mulch or manure, for example), a tooth bar wouldn't be necessary. But a dried out pile of dirt...mulch or anything that has had a chance to set around and "solidify" makes a tooth bar an important addition to your implements.

The toothbar (especially with 500-700 pounds of ballast on the 3PH) will dig right into a pile of dried out clumpy dirt. The toothbar will break into the dirt. Digging with just the bucket cutting edge will result in your rear tires spinning...you won't break into that pile.

That tooth bar also works great for dragging brush and vines, by the way.

Even though the 790 weighs about 35% more then your 2210 does, it's still a bit of a lightweight. Adding a ballast box to that 790 would be a worthwhile investment!

It all depends on what kind of material and floor. Moving hard piles or dirt or digging a hole - a toothbar is a must. For moving loose material, scraping floors - you dont want a tooth bar in many cases. If I had to do it over, I would get the heavy duty bucket with the holes already in the bucket. I ended up ordering a toothbar for my material bucket for my 400X. It is removable with 2 bolts on each side. You can order them in different sizes, different teeth, etc.

stretch,

If you go with a toothbar, go with a removable one. I have the Markham toothbar for my 2210, and it does a great job and i seasy to take off with just two bolts. Unless you are digging, you will want the toothbar off, its just too easy to damage lawn, landscaping etc with it. Ask me how I know! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I added some pallot forks and that is eating up my budget. I think I will try it for a bit without teeth and if I see the need I will resubmit to my wife for supplemental budget approval.

Thanks

They're about $300. I also got a removable Markham toothbar. Have only used it once, to dig up some asphalt paving that lapped over into my neighbor's area. Most of the time, you won't want to have the toothbar on there. The Markham fastens with 2 large bolts at the sides of the bucket. The "teeth" slide over the edge of the bucket on both sides.

I do not have one and do not miss it. Possibly if I had a toothbar I would love it, but so far I've not needed it.
