It's gonna die anyway and his tractor is a weenie too.

We're all gonna die anyway. Also, we're all weenies too. Also, this:

I prefer a trencher myself. Much quicker and less messy. I can go to Herc or Black Swamp rentals and rent one for 125 bucks a day and do a couple hundred feet of waterline trench in about 4 hours.

Always enjoy a good fabrication story. Got a quick spade to try years ago. Handy planting some fruit trees. Most handy for reaching near or under fences to cut or remove trees or brush. Could reach where grapples or bucket couldn’t or cause collateral damage. Surprised how thick a root it could slice through after sharpening the edge. Had to reinforce the bucket on the Kubota B20 after bending then straightening the bucket cutting edge. Will not fit the current double cutting-edge B26 HD bucket. Also fits pallet forks but haven’t tried that feature.

If transplanting always prune back heavy for best results.

For myself - and maybe for a few others, too - it's not about money. It's not even about how much work gets done.

It's something else....I'm not sure quite what to call it, but it has something to do with the fun of solving a puzzle coupled with the enjoyment of building something. Even if that something is all made from junkyard parts and even then probably not worth the price of the metal it took to make it.

The best way I can explain it is gizmo-making is kinda like spending $3000 on a boat and tackle to go catch a fish you could buy at the grocers for twenty bucks.
Knowing that, I'd still rather make up a gizmo and then later go fishing. Maybe I'll tow the boat with the tractor, too!

But that's just me. If you'd rather rent then I think that's fine. In fact, it's more than fine. I'm not stupid....I know what you are saying is smarter than what I'm doing and I'd bet it is darn near as much fun, too.

And I don't understand it either....

Had a backhoe once on the back of one of my previous Kubota tractors. Had to be the most useless pieces of equipment I ever owned and I was happy to sell it. If I really need a hoe for something like grubbing out stumps, I rent that too. Herc and Black Swamp deliver those as well, fueled up, greased and ready to work with no responsibility other than not being stupid with it. Rented a JLG last summer to pop a couple stumps. One day, 200 bucks, delivered and picked up.

I have a philosophy about equipment. If it sits idle for a year, no problem. 2 years and it's an issue and it gets sold off. At one time I owned 3 large frame Kubota M Series tractors. In reality I only need 2. One stays married to the round baler all the time because of the electronics, the other handles the disc mower, rake and tedder (if needed). 3 was a crowd so I sold off the 3rd one and put the money in my retirement account. Have a nice NH575 in the barn that if I don't use it this year is gonna go too. I quit making small squares last year, only make rounds now.

I don't want to rain on anybody's parade - yet... but I just bought one of those clamp on shovels for my Kubota L3400. So far I'm having trouble justifying it. Its been raining here for the last month or more so I haven't really had a chance to give it a decent try.

Thinking that the Piranha tooth bar wasn't letting it sit solid on the bucket, I cut out two slots on the buck to let it sit flush. That looked pretty good, but not a totally flush surface for the shovel to sit completely flat. First timeout with it I broke the tie-down chain holding it in place. Next try I took the Piranha tooth bar off and mounted the shovel on the bucket - as intended by the manufacturer.

The shovel may prove out to be worthwhile, but with my 10 minute use, I'm having doubts. Hopefully next week we'll have enough dry days that I can give a better evaluation. For sure though, I don't expect to get the same fantastic results as the guy in the first message video has.

Durabilt Underlift Ratchet Chain Binder — 6600-Lb. Load Capacity, Model# LDR-UR-38 from Northern tool.

Using a chain binder like this is handy attaching a quick spade to smaller height buckets.

Little Massey in the video did a great job of removing that bush. I suppose one could rent a power shovel/hammer and screw with it for an hr of backbraking work. Could maybe rent a small towable hoe if one was available, not as efficient on that kind of job though. Bucket shovel to the rescue. Now on my list of things to build. We do have a Case 580 Extenda hoe here for serious ****.
