One thing I hate worse than removing stumps is looking at them...

(tulip) Poplars have huge multiple lateral roots often as large as the trunk itself...and a tap root...

So I believe most of these are “Aspen Poplar” but the one by the transmission line is definitely a “Tulip Poplar”.

As far as stumps go, the ones around the house will be left as it’s on a heavily wood side hillside. Not like it’s in a lawn or somewhere you will see. The one by the transmission lines will be ground. The power company is picking up the bill for that removal to my arborist. He quoted higher than normal expecting Hem to offer to go half on it with us so that it wouldn’t cost me out of pocket. They are going to cover the whole thing so he’s grinding that monster stump.

Then he should reduce back to near the normal cost.

Makes no difference to me. Does not cost me anything and I get the stump ground. I have nothing to complain about.

Those types of things cost you every month in your electric bill.

So you’d just volunteer thousands of dollars from your pocket then for the sake of it? I don’t feel the slightest bit bad about it. I didn’t ask them to run 100kv transmission lines through my pasture and it’s not like I get paid for the usage of my land. I say me getting a stump ground still puts me on the short end of the stick.

I'm saying they should not have to pay double because the contactor inflated the bill thinking they'd only offer to pay half.

If the normal rate would be 1,000 and he doubled it to 2,000 thinking they'd only pay 1,000 (half), he should cut it back to the original 1,000 since they offered to pay the whole amount. That should not cost you anything additional. What he's doing could almost be considered fraud.

He went from $4k to drop it on the ground with no removal (it is exceptionally large and close to monster high voltage stuff and falling in one piece is out due to proximity of fencing and barns behind it) for me to $6800 for dropping and cleaning up.

The thought was that they’d offer to pay half, which is their normal offer and then I would have $800 out of pocket. Instead they offered to pay it all so I’m having them drop it, chip the smaller stuff, leave firewood sized pieces and a few larger logs from the trunk, and grind the stump.

I see what you were thinking, but that is not the case. I am using a very reputable arborist for this stuff who does a lot with the utility companies. I doubt he would jeapordize future work on something silly like that.

Seems to be one of those in between woods. A quick search calls it a hardwood with softwood properties, or a soft hardwood. OK. Basically it's a hardwood that's easy to work and is common in millwork and trim. The dense grain makes it good for a smooth appearance in shelves.

I have a hybrid Poplar in the yard that grows quite tall, but I can break branches under an inch or so thick by hand. I cut most of it down and found it burns well in the wood stove.

You know hardwood and softwood has nothing to do with how hard the wood is, right?
