When I was in the military my second favorite position was the full squat ,feet flat, both arms braced to the knees.Very fast and steadly deadly. The secret is to get bone on bone contact with both braces. Resting on the muscle is unstable and increases the heartbeat problem, especially after exertion. It takes practice but has the added benefit of keeping your butt off the ground

It is a favorite position for practice shooting. In woods I can only do better - i.e. treestand with a front bar. I don't attempt to shoot off hand at any creature yet, it would not be fair.

And tomorrow, the bow season starts in our county, can't wait - likely will end up sitting in a tree with a stick like an idjit, but I enjoy it the same.

My favorite position is the one I can get into and still see what I'm shooting at. That being said though what is the most comfortable position assuming I can see the target from all of them? I'm fairly stable when I stand, better when I sit, and best when I'm laying down, but I can't see much from down there. I'd much rather shoot from a standing position and don't mind leaning the gun against a tree or something, but I hate to shoot from anywhere down there. Seriously I'd rather let the critter get away most of the time if I can't shoot from a standing position.

It's been a long time since I visited the fire and manuever courses, but my favorite position was the hasty knee position..
back then we did not have scopes on the rifles....and I don't recall the patterns...

right knee on the ground, right ankle under the butt, left elbow on the left knee, sling wrap around the left forearm. right elbow pulled in tight to the rib cage.

done right, standing walking to firing position in seconds...

Later,
J

At my job I used to tell those who would listen, that when the midlife crisis hits me I am not getting no mistress, Corvette or Harley. I will buy me a week of sniper training.:)

Didn't go over very well, would you believe it?:D

Interesting... I went to a fundraiser for DVIC, a domestic violence intervention group, that my mom volunteers at. They work closely with local police and sheriff.

To help the group, the local police offered a training day with the SWAT team for auction. It quickly went to more than I could afford. Sure sounded interesting though!
