Looking for some input...my wife thinks we are crazy, but my kids and I want to get our hands on an older N series tractor to spend some quality dad/son time together. The question is, I'm seeing a wide range of prices and don't know what to make of it. For example, locally there is a totally restored 41 9N in showroom condition for 2,700. The other 9N's I've seen here have been in working condition for 1,200 - 2,000 but not anything you'd say is parade ready. I know they guy with the restored one must have spent easily 1,500 on the paint alone, so what is a fair price on a 9n in need of some work, but running? It seems to me, I'd be $ ahead to just purchase a completed project.

Almost forgot, I have an opportunity to buy a 2000 Diesel for 2,500, this is the early 70's model, would this be a more useful tractor? I would assume so, but any pitfalls to look out for?

$1500 for a tractor paint job? Maybe, but unlikely. However, it's very possible to sink a lot of $$$ into a vintage tractor. I'm doing a complete restoration now on a 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF tractor (about the same size as a Ford 8N or 9N). Paid $1100 for the tractor off craigslist, non-running (no compression), invested $1600 for engine rebuild ($800 parts, $800 labor). Figure I'll have at least $4500 invested before I'm done in another year or so. The engine now is on a run stand being checked out (if I ever get some time for this), all parts are painted and ready for reassembly. Got the rear end assembled so far.

You probably don't want to get this involved in tractor restoration. My advice: get a running 8N or 9N, service it (points, plugs, fluids, etc). New gauges, maybe. Repaint it--paint should cost $50-75 with spray gun/air compressor; a little more with spray cans (a rattle can restoration).

Have fun; good luck.

Thanks for your input. I'm basing the cost off my neighbor's IMRON paint job on a cub lo-boy he paid $2k for. Unbelievelable showroom like finish. Too rich for my project.

What paint is best suited for the chassis?

Thanks again!

Paint? I use Valspar tractor paint from Tractor Supply. I'm not a fanatic on paint jobs so the $30/gal stuff is OK for my needs.

I've got an IH 706 sitting in my shop right now. It belongs to a friend. I'm working on a couple finishing touches after he had it painted. Over $600 in material and the painter charged him $1200 labor. It looks like a show car! Ya almost gotta wear sun glasses to look at it!

Paint job, new tires, new seat, decals, engine overhaul, clutch, and a few dozen other detail items, and he has double (EASILY) the value of the tractor invested.

Nice looking ride though.

It's a "Parade Queen" from this point forward.

OTG... here's my advice.. take it for what it costs.. :)

1, the N series are neat and nostalgic, and you can spend nearly as much buying one and restoring it as you can buying a slightly later model and restoring it.. only difference.. you have more 'real' tractor in your hand if you buy a later one, once you are done with the job.

On the diesel 2000.. hard to say without seeing pics of it and know more. does it start easy? does it need ether to start? smoke? slobber?.. does it have the 4spd, or 6 or 8 or? tranny..

other details in general on an old tractor to think about are rubber, tinwork, genny or alternator? does it charge.. are you gonna change it out?

Me? I'd AT LEAST look for a 55+ machine IE.. a 6XX/8XX/7XX/9XX/5XX or the early 4 cyl 2000/4000. If looking 53-64, get a gasser.. if 65+.. get a diesel.

post back some more info on that 2000

going and checking out an old tractor is more of an art than a science.

also.. as FWJ hinted.. it's easy to 'double' the cost of a refurb.. ie.. buy the machine, and even if it runs ok, it's easy to sink the purchase price back into it again making ir run great and look pretty.

if it's an ugly beater that runs bad.. you can sink 2x to 3x the price into it making it look and run good.

on the 2000 3 cyl, for instance.. for 2500$ if the front hood nose clip is damaged beyond body work repair.. be ready to spend 500$ to get one delivered to your door, plus another 50$ for a grill screen.. fenders.. 150$ a pop.. etc. rubber, if rim is ok.. alot at least 250$ for each rear, and go ahead and say a round 100$ for the fronts, each.

economy paint is 35$ a gallon.. economy primer 35$/g, hardner, 14$/pint, supplies like mineral spirits and naptha are 5-10$ a jug.. etc.. then you need to add up all the surfacing supplies like sand paper, sanding sponges, 3m prep discs, bondo, glazing putty, plus a few rattle cans of primer for spot fixes, some fiberglass matting and resin for small repairs. etc. etc.

cleaning supplies.. figure on getting a gallon of soap based degreaser, and at least a couple cans of petro-degreaser.... plus you will likely need it pressure washed a couple times between scraping, degreaseing with petro, more scraping, then a final soap degreasing.. etc. masking materials like blue tape and paper.. etc.. etc.

add to that basic servicing supplies... the bat if needed is a 100+$ job.. cables and ends $$, oil for crankcase and rear end, even if using economy is gonna be about 100$ for a full service including greasings.

not disuading you.. just prepairing you.. the purchase price is only the front door to a project. and yeah.. buying one in decent looking and running condition, is generally a good step up on a first project. once you get a few under yer feet you can go for the rusted out hulks puleld out of the hedge rows that take you 2 months to even locate parts for it, then start taking apart all the broken pieces and drilling out bolts.. :)

That is actually on the low side of a professional doing the job. I was quoted $2200 to professionly paint my '73 2000-show worthy and that was me stripping all the old paint. The painter is going to do some minor dent repair and weld up some small pinholes in th ebottom of the fenders and also install the decals.

Of course to me $2200 is not bad. I paid 10K to get my vintage Mustang painted and that is the going rate for a above average paint job on an old car. My friend paid $27K to get his street rod painted-but he was going for some top awards shows.

I've sprayed 3 cars in the past as well as a couple of tractors but don't really have a place set up at my new home to paint and don't want to get paint everywhere

I'm going nuts on this one.

Total show queen. No one is really restoring these tractors yet. I have lot's of original NOS parts I have been buying up over the years. Grill, seats, headlights, instrument cluster etc

Having lots of the original brackets and bolts cad and zinc plated just how they were done in the day and having some of the safety decals etc made correctly as the repos are incorrect or not available.

Found an NOS seat couple of years ago from a guy who bought it in 1974 to replace his and he never did.

Found some places on the tractor where there was paint dabs on a bolt that showed it was tightened and I plan on replacing the paint dabs.

Have not started restoring it yet but will probably start this winter.

gonna look nice when you go to that kind of exacting detail. probably nicer than when on the sales lots after 'assembly line' production.. etc.
