That tractor belonged to a neighbor who was helping pump the liquid manure. Tax money is far from stolen from others at gunpoint, but if you want to experience that, there are plenty of others countries that would be glad to actually do that for real, and where do you think that your food comes from. How can you think for one minute that grants cripple our economy, or raise your taxes? You want to talk about gross spending, put the lazy people back to work in this country. At least these poor farmers, and yes I said poor farmers, are working for a living to support their families, and provide us with staples that we need, like the milk that this farm provided.I'm confused, why should my tax money be used to make these other peoples' jobs safer? They run a business, safety is part of that business. It isn't for my money to make them safe. The price of that tractor sitting on the edge of the poo pit would have easily bought an entire safety net system for that pit.
Why is the knee-jerk 'fix' of so many to "give them money stolen at gunpoint from other people" (AKA a grant)?
These people weren't forced into the farming business, they know the costs, the risks and what is needed to make it safer for everyone involved. I feel bad for the kids who died, but the father knew the dangers and sure as heck shouldn't have had his kids working in an area so well known for deaths.
I have no pity for people who take unnecessary risks and lose because they were too cheap to invest in safety equipment. Poor farmers my butt! Poor kids for dying because of a negligent dad who ignored the risks.
"Hey kids, who wants to go with dad to Chernobyl for the day and help run the reactor?!"

I can give you a few reason why we can afford to help are farmers, and why we need to. This nation was founded by farmers, and our network of agriculture has always been aided by the government since the time of Lincoln. If you enjoy eating, and I rely on it, then you need to think about the bigger picture, and the rapid decline and demise of farms in this country. Farm grants take up such a tiny portion of your tax dollars, and they are such an important investment. Can you imagine if the counties we rely on for our food now imposed mass trade embargos on us, and we could not import food. We use to grow just about 100% of the food we needed in this country. I think what happened was a terrible tragedy, and very preventable. So many farmers are struggling to just keep above water, and extra expenses like that are just not an option. If you think for one minute that this farmer wanted to die, and lose his sons, well..I understand where you are coming from, but we spend your tax money on just about every country but ours.
To keep tax payers money in perspective, we have been spending 411 million dollars a day in Iraq, thats about $5000 a second in a country that is not ours. Thats a grand total of 390 billion dollars. We only spend 12% of the USDA budget to help American Farmers. One days spending in Iraq, would outfit every farm in America with the safety measures that they need. Farmers are declining so fast in this country, we can't afford to loose
Failing agricultural
systems and food shortages fuel political instability. USDA helps American farmers and ranchers use effective technologies to increase agricultural productivity and the nutritional value of foods, which can enhance food security around the world, and help find export markets for their products, "USDA 2012"
