Farmall 140
I have a Farmall 140, serial number 1129 J. Someone changed the original generator and voltage regulator out for an alternator. I'm having trouble with the alternator, and I don't like the way it sets out in the weather with no guard around the front pulley/fan, (I can see someone accidentally sticking a finger into it), so I'm thinking about going back to the original. Was this tractor originally a 6 volt system. What do you guys recommend?
Thanks

according to my list that's a 58 model, and was likely 6v. many models went to 12v in 66.

Thanks Soundguy,
I couldn't figure out what year it was. It seemed old enough to be 6v; however, the lights and the rest of the wiring look original. The only thing that doesn't look original is the alternator. What do you think about changing back to original?

it would have had a 12v genny back then.

you call on the change out.

I have oem 6v machines with 6v gennies.. oem 12v machines with 12v gennies.. oem 6v machines that are now 12v using a 12v genny as a 'stealth' conversion, and oem 6v machines on 12v using a gm alternator.. and um.. I guess some oem 12v'ers using old style motorola as original supplied euipment alternators.

Very few guys go back to 6V generators. Alternators are much better and 12V is better than 6v. There is a reason they don't make them 6v anymore.
Build a guard around the alternator if you want. I went to12V on mine 20 years ago and have never had a problem with fingers getting caught.

they don't build em 6v anymore due tot he amount of copper needed.

need lotsa amps to make watts on 6v = big copper = big$$

Soundguy,
If I'm reading you right I should be able to bolt on a 12v genny and it will work fine and look original. I like that Idea. I'm not a absolute stickler for original, but this tractor is in real good shape and about the only thing that isn't oem is the alternator.

bolt on the genny, AND get the reg for it.. brackets.. etc.

presumably someone modified or tossed the oem genny brackets when they hung that aluminum thing on there.. ;)
