Farm Show Magazine

So many of the projects start out with: I bought a combine for $800 and starting taking this off, cutting that..........

I am not a farm person, but I thought a combine was a self propelled machine with at least four wheels, a 200HP+ engine, tranny, hydraulic pumps, etc. Just where are people getting these huge machines for so little money. If nothing else, it seems as though you could take off wheels, axles, seats and the motor and sell the rest for scrap metal and get your whole $800 back and keep all the other stuff for free.

Even totally beat up cars I wouldn't trust to go on a 100 mile trip sell for more than that. Why are combines so cheap???

Where are you finding cheap combines? I'm in the market for one and not finding any "cheap".
I subscribe to both Hobby Farm and Farm Show...both are interesting but when they both run out I won't get them any more.

I won't re-up for Hobby Farm either. I'm not a farmer, hobby or otherwise, plus after reading several issues I'm pretty sure the magazine is for girls and/or stereotypical "city slickers turned farmers" like Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor. :p

Seriously in at least half of the tractor ads there are women on the tractors. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I'd love for my wife to be into tractors. Its just that I don't seem to fit the target audience.

I have wished for some time that there was a good tractor oriented magazine aimed at the CUT set. Heck, they could call it Weekendwannabe for all I care, but I'd really enjoy a tractor magazine done along the lines of the popular car or truck magazines with a good measure of mechanical how-tos, implement how-tos and reviews and a bit or rural life stuff thrown in. I guess there just isn't a big enough market.

I think you and I and our various virtual friends and acquaintences are writing it.

I too wish there was something more formal.

Man, I'd subscribe to "Weekend Wannabee". I have also tried a number of magazines: Hobby Farms, Progressive Farmer, even Mother Earth News. I get something out of them, but not like I'd hoped. I'd love to see one with a focus on the tractors/implements with some more aggresive projects mixed in- so instead of a cover story on "How to grow Heirloom Tomatos" there would be an article on "How to add gauge wheels to your Boxblade".

I've thought a few times too about all the home shows and gardening shows on TV nowadays. I would think there would be enough of a market for a hobby farm type show... "This Old Farm" or "Trading Tractors". With enough luck they might even go to a major network with "Extreme Makeover: Farm Edition" where some ADHD host travels the country bailing out failing farms where one or both of the parents have been injured in farming accidents.

My wife sits the family down every week to watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition with her. The only episode that I really got into was when they re-did some old farmer's house. I was okay until they got to the part about how all the farmers in the area had donated hay to the operation. When they opened the doors of the new barn and it was full of hay, I seriously almost cried.

Okay, so maybe its time for us to start TBN Magazine. I'll volunteer as staff photographer and I'm clearly well qualified to write the silly column on the last page that ticks everybody off.:D

Seriously, wouldn't a good tractor magazine be great? I don't think it would appeal to the serious farmer....but it could, especially if there were tips and tricks for saving money in regard to operating the bigger machines. And even those of us with 'toy' tractors would probably like reading about and looking at pictures of the larger machines.

I can see reviews, an antique/restoration section, beauty shots (just tractors, no chicks...needs to be family oriented). Discussions on fuels, additives, quick fixes.

TBN Magazine
The magazine for people who like tractors and the things tractors do!

Seriously.....I'll be the photographer. Eagerly awaiting my first assignment.

Hey, I'm going to Leinbach in a few weeks (I hope). maybe I could write an article on a local implement manufacturer like them! That's the kind of thing I'd like to read about.

I'm just thinking out loud here, but someone needs to ask Muhammad about a monthly or bi-monthly TBN web-zine. Release it via email in a PDF format. Sell ad space in it......

Seriously, not a bad idea. I write technical stuff all day at work. I don't think it would be too far of a stretch to do a freelance article now and then. I really think the market for something like this is growing.

There's got to be a whole industry that would fall all over each other to get ad space in a magazine like this if the circulation is there. You've got your tractor manufacturers and dealers, implement dealers, welding supplies, barn builders, guys like ubuildit that sell plans, aftermarket tractor upgrades, plus all the related stuff that guys and gals like us are into like large gardens, horses, hunting and foodplots, camping and woodcutting.

We'll have to compare notes. I wonder how long it will take to get the first issue.

Evenin Iplayfarmer,
Sorry I havent added anything to this thread in a while, but have been kinda busy on other not so fun projects ! ;)

I did get my first copy about two or three weeks ago. It does seem to be a pretty interesting read, but agree with some of the others that I dont think it will change the way I do things around here that much ! It seemed to me for the most part that the projects were geared to larger farm operations etc...
Im not saying there isnt any valuable info in there because Im sure there is, but not that much that peaks my interests ! For $14.95 still not a bad deal IMHO ! :) Although I dont think I would renew at this point ! JMO ! ;)
