Farm Pro Chipper (Jinma):don\'t do this!

I spent about 2 hours today trying to free up my Farm Pro 6" chipper. I was chipping a 4 to 5 inch old limb. All of the sudden tractor, chipper and everything just shut down. Tried to move things by hand, no go. Took the unit back to the barn and took the inspection plate off. Pryed out what I could in the way of old wood chips. Tried the pto again, and rock solid...no go. Took the discharge shoot off and found some big pieces in there. I took a crow bar to the pto knuckle joint and really had to push. When I did the shaft just turned on the belts. I then took a 2x2 and stuck it down the discharge shoot and where it rested on one of the fins. I then carefully hit the end of the board and got the fly wheel to finally move. Kept doing that and turning at the pto with crow bar. After about 2 hours of that and picking out pieces of old wood ships, finally got things lose.

So...word of advice, do not try to chip up old wood. It will jamb your chipper.

I have stalled my tractor with the chipper. I have gotten a piece wedged into the feed roller when it was just a little bit larger than the opening. I have missed a piece of barbed wire embedded in a tree trunk (chipped the blade) and have never jammed the chipper that hard.

Did it slow down before it jammed? I can't imagine the forces involved in stopping 600+ pounds of flywheel cold.

I have a 9in bearcat chipper and had trouble with the old wood too. Also had trouble with evergreen limbs as they have a lot of small foliage. They would clog the chute and I had to be sure to keep the rpm's up to keep the air flow going. I wound up shortening the chute about a foot and it made all the difference. I do have hydraulic feed that I can control. Without it I am sure that I would be plugging it up more often. Dry wood cuts harder so slow the feed if you can.

No, it did not slow down. Thats what so hard to believe. In have a TC40d and it stopped everything on a dime. I retro spec what I should have done was not try to move the chipper fly wheel again in the cutting direction. Next time I will immediately remove the clean out and try to rotate in the non cutting direction.

No, on the Jinma there is no way, at least that I know of, to slow the feed roller down by adjustment.

I am supprised that there is not some kind of sheer pin on these things.
