I recently bought a middle 1990's Deere F510 mower with a Kawasaki engine and hydro transmission. An oil change is next and I wonder if I am OK with current SM rated oil in that hydro? It takes 2.2 quarts and that convers both the engine and hydro.
Current oils are lacking in zinc and phosphorus and the owner's manual calls for an SG or SL oil. I think the engine needs it but I'm not sure on the hydo.
Do you suppose I am OK with a newer oil or should I pay extra and get something current like Royal Purple with added zinc and phosphorus content?
Any ideas on this?

Well, I guess not so fast.
Went to Deere to pick up some oil and the rating on the Turf Guard was SM, which is the newer grade with the wear additives removed. There was some JD regular Torq-Guard 10w30 oil there with the older SL rating and I wonder if I should go with that?
These newer oils are causing lots of mischief in older engines.
