Oh really a trencher works well for trenching?

I was asking about a 3-point trencher...I've used Ditch Witch and Vermeer models for years. I want to get a 3-point trencher and then I justify a better tractor (if the 3pt style works well).

And yes you have to have the Hydro...and you can backfill with any bucket. Ever used a skid-steer to backfill? It can be faster than the trencher blade.

Thanks Beenthere...

I've been told that geared machines won't go slow enough to use the trencher.
The crawl gear/speed that some Hydro machines have is said to be perfect.

That said, I've never seen one for rent or I would have tried it anyway. My backhoe bucket is 16" and it makes a mess trenching.

My tractor was set up for trenching with the lowest gear producing 60' per hour @ WOT. Its a Jinma 284 with the extra creeper gear box for a total of 12 gears forward, 3 in reverse. There is no way my Ford 861 would go slow enough.

I do not have a trencher so I could not tell you how it works but I am sure its fine. I love the slow speed for removing stumps and jobs like that. Use it all the time.

Not saying it won't work. Buy it and then post up how you like it.

Good luck.

I'm sure its overkill for your application, but check out DK Precision Trenchers they offer 2 models, a 612 and 628, the 628 being capable of 100'/min digging a 10"wide by 36" deep trench. max depth of both machines is 6ft. they also have the advantege of automatic grade control. the small one requires 150hp, the 628 needs 200hp.

FYI, all the grey market Japanese tractors are set up for tillers. They have gears so slow you can set them to PTO rpm in low gear and get off and put a mark on the ground to be able to see they are moving.

Hi, I have a Dual/Woods three point trencher that has a hydraulic motor to propel the trencher wheels. This unit also has a hyd ram that lifts the back of the tractor and consequently shifts rear tractor weight to trencher wheels for traction. I set mine up so that the rear tractor wheels barley touch the ground. Trenching speed is set by leaning back and setting the trenchers speed valve to the speed required. Chain is run by tractors pto.
I have this setup on a JD 9 speed 970 tractor. And have trenched with it for over 10 years and it works great.
Don't know if this unit is still for sale, the original manufacture Dual, was taken over by Woods some years back.

cheers,
