Expensive Lesson Learnt - Shoulda Known Better

Well, I suppose I've joined the "Nuru Ranks" where we're already replacing glass on our new tractors...
Last night I decided to install the Rear wiper kit I had gotten a little while back....everything was going perfectly...textbook install. Get to the actual installation piece of the wiper motor which "required" the removal of the RH Hinge....long story short, the window slid, I heard a bang and I spent the next hour vacuuming glass out of the cab and sweeping the garage....

Moral of the story....DONT READ THE BLEEPING DIRECTIONS....I knew better, and had an uneasy feeling when doing it as I was directed to do in the directions, but I assumed JD knew more then I did....

Well.... After Nuru took out his front glass, I made my loader a permanent fixture..... Thank god I ordered mine with all the goodies i wanted in the glass.... Sorry to hear about this Dave..

There is good news... It will be pretty easy to install the wiper in the new glass.. Sorry, I had to.....

What step was it in Deere install directions that lead you to break the glass? I did a rear wiper install a while back. Don't know that I explicitly followed the insructions, but I don't remember having any problems.

Well.... There is good news... It will be pretty easy to install the wiper in the new glass.. Sorry, I had to.....

No need to be sorry, thats what I thought while sweeping the glass, and she said the same thing, ROFL!

What led to the breakage was in the instructions they say to remove only the RH hinge and carefully balance it from the LH Hinge while you do your thing....2 things...
1) My Tractor already had a "Wiper Ready" Hinge...Basically they sent me the exact same hinge I already had on the tractor. so I didnt need to remove/replace the hinge at all.
2) It was "Balancing" Precariously on the LH Hinge...I had supported it the best I could...but it slid and the momentum of the slide/fall obviously tweaked the glass to its breaking point. The pic in the instructions shows the glass dangling in the air from the LH Hinge...They must have used a Plexi-Glass window to do the instructions...no way a real one would hang like that.

If I were to explain to someone how to do it best, I'd reccomend removing the rear glass COMPLETELY off of the tractor and working on it like that.

Maybe a dumb question, but................if it already was equiped with the hinge for the wiper. Why did you have the hinge loose. I'll have to dig out the install instructions and review them. I figure my back glass will get broken one of these days while using the landscape rake on a stone road. I've already had a couple bounce off the rear glass.

Dave, sorry to hear that. One of the down sides of owning a cab with lots of glass. I'll probably break one of my windows one of these days. In general, I believe the mark-up on JD stuff is high so maybe the dealer will give you a break on the replacement window.
Not that it makes you feel any better, but I was over at my dealer recently and noticed they just received a pile of JD parts which included a new 3X20 windshield.

Well, I only discovered the "wiper ready" hinge after taking it apart...even then, I HAD to remove the bolt which held the glass to the hinge either way...so either way I had to take it apart. Not to mention, I had to open up the hole on the rubber trim/mount thingie between the hinge & glass to accomoditate the wiper motor shaft...

Window is ordered, I should have it next Wed/Thurs, I COULD have gotten it on monday via them shipping it directly to the house but they said that UPS has a field day with boxes labeled "GLASS" and "FRAGILE"....quicker & painless in the long haul gettin it in on a stock order...which made sense to me.

If it makes you feel any better.............. when i installed the rear wiper on my Kubota, i didn't break my glass.


Seriously though...... just chalk it up to a lesson learned These type of things just make us wiser in the long run.
