I dont undertand why I cannot buy a root rake/grappler and hook up the same hydraulics that my FEL would use.

Why do I need to buy a special kit and plumb in more hydraulic lines?

Why are the kits so expensive, what in the kits that add up to many many hundreds of dollars?

Help me to understand what I do not understand. Thanks

Because a grapple goes on the FEL in addition. You still need your basic fel controls, now you add a third function, clamping, hence the term, 3rd function.

You can run the grapple lines to a rear SCV, (auxiliary hydraulic valve) if your tractor has one.

I have one that came with my first tractor

Mine will have one Im assuming cause it is being equipped with a backhoe.

Im guessing thats not all thats needed though?

Actually, no. The backhoe is connected to power beyond, which id different than a rear selective control valve.(scv). Power beyond delivers the full flow of the pump, without restriction, to the backhoe. The backhoe has its own valves that regulate the flow to the cylinders and back to the tractor.

You need a control valve, either a solenoid valve, which is what a third function uses, or a scv.

Once you have a valve then you need to run hydraulic lines. Hydraulic hose and fittings are expensive.

Kits are expensive because the components are expensive. A precision double acting solenoid valve and subplate, hoses, hose ends, joystick handle with button, all this stuff costs money.

Those are good questions. On your tractor - the first hydraulic function= raise/lower the FEL arms - the second hydraulic function= dip or raise whatever is attached to the end of the FEL( bucket, forks, grapple, etc) - the third hydraulic function= open/close the jaws of a grapple.

The third function valve is expensive because it is a fairly unique accessory. Same as adding additional SCV to the rear of the tractor.
