exhaust smell

My father keeps commenting on how my 4510 exhaust smell bothers him. He says that their Kioti DK65 doesnt smell nearly as bad and that he can run it in their barn with out any problems. I really havent noticed it. Its got a little over 300 hrs on it. Should I be looking for something or is exhaust smell typical.
I wouldnt really bother but he keeps harping me about it.

Some diesels do have more odor than others. Or it could be that the exhaust outlet is in a different area that makes it more noticeable. I like upright exhaust stacks so the fumes go up where they don't bother you as much. There also could be some differences in the fuel itself. Are you both running the same brand?

My JD 990 stinks too. Can't be running too rich, though, as my oil is not sooty. Nature of the beast, I guess.

I think they are just jealous because I bought a Deere /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Different fuel, they are using fuel that has been sitting for some time on the farm they just bought. Not sure about exhaust location.

My 4210 smells worst than my previous tractor, Ford 1700. But the Ford had an upright exhaust, so that may be real difference. The exhaust stack is nice for routing exhaust away from the operator, but a pain around trees/low branches. Not sure which is the lesser of the evils. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

My 4710 seems to have a strong smell also, but I've come to the conclusion it's just my perception based on the location of the exhaust. I'm still in the process of "recovering" what was a neglected piece of land, so I'm on and off the tractor a lot picking things up and have my head down by the front and side where the exhaust is. That with the slow speed of plowing, mowing and clearing and the fumes just seem to come right up to my face. I can't install a vertical stack yet because I'm also in and out of woods.
Nothing beats a nice quartering headwind when cutting, until I turn and go the other way! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have also noticed a significant difference in exhaust smell between the JD 755 I used to have and the 4310 I currently have. The smell from the 4310 is much more noticable. I don't mind it but my wife hates it. Oh well, I guess she won't be using the tractor then.

At times my 4410 exhaust will get to me. I think it's the location of the exhaust pipe. I wonder if they ran it out to the rear if it would be any better. My Kubota L275 had a vertical exhaust and I never had this problem.

Exhaust pipe exit location has a lot to do with it. I switched my 4310 to a vertical pipe using JD's kit and the smell is practically gone unless you're working in a building with a low ceiling.

I am lucky since I have no prior tractor to compare my 4310 to. I even enjoy the occasional smell of diesel!

I think all the direct injected diesels smell a lot worse then the indirect ones do.

On my 990 my exhaust reflects right off my FEL back towards me so its very noticeable and on occasion it gives me a headache, when I get my blade in and go pick it up I will order the vertical exhaust /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Are you sure it's a simple conversion to vertical exhaust on the 990? I too have the newer style 990 with under-hood exhaust (which I don't care for) and asked my dealer about replacing it with the vertical stack from the older style 990. He looked at the parts lists and the pieces have different numbers all the way back to the manifold. That would mean a new exhaust pipe, muffler, manifold, maybe mounting brackets, etc. He didn't think it was worth pursuing at all. If you find out different, let us know - I want a vertical exhaust!

If it is indeed more than a simple final pipe swap, I'll probably just build my own. The final pipe just bolts on to the muffler so it shouldn't be too hard to bend (or have bent) a different pipe that comes out the side and up. Fab up a flange to weld to the pipe and bolt it on. It would also require cutting a hole in the side panel, but that's no problem.

Actually, now that I think about it, maybe the old style JD pipe could just be modified with a different flange to bolt to the muffler ....

Have heart. All diesels will start smelling better by about the end of 2006 when the sulfur gets bled out of the various distribution systems by the new low sulfur stuff coming into it from the refineries. Also, biodiesel will start becoming more available. It's completely safe to use up to around 20% biodiesel (labeled B20) in today's diesels, no matter what their age.

Pretty much the case. Primarily due to the compression ratios as direct injection runs less compression.

Adding 20% bio diesel blend to either will help with the odor tremendously.
