Having been a deputy for 18 years, I have responded to hundreds of serious accidental injuries and deaths, both residential and industrial( lots of "unloaded" guns out there) Many involve alcohol/ drugs or unsafe equipment but the majority or just carelessness,repetition or being in a hurry. So heres my story.I always wear boots when working around the place but the other day I needed to use my tractor for some unplaned chores and jumped on with tennis shoes.At one point when I needed to brake the little loop on the back of my shoe had slipped around the differential lock pedal.Fortunately I was going slow and on level terrain but needless to say it got my attention.In other circumstances it could have been a real disaster.

Welcome aboard. How right you are. Why wait until you drop something on your tootsies to remember. Don't want to be like the go-fast kids on their rice rocket motorcycles, shorts, sneakers or flipflops, no shirt...BUT they have their 5 dollar helmet on their 5 dollar head as they pull the front wheel at 50 mph.

Yepper, been there with the laces.
Since I had a stroke, my right leg isn't fully functional. The leg drags somewhat and I cannot lift it as much as I could (before the stroke).
If I'm wearing tennis shoes, there's a tendency for the loop of the knot to catch the MFWD lever, mostly as I'm getting off the machine. This has caused a few..more then a few, close calls.
I can't say I always wear high top work boots, but I sure do most the time!!

too true, Rocky .... escept the $5 helmet .... they usually have the custom painted Evil Dragon Lord helmets.
Make me feel somewhat overdressed at 90 degrees when I'm wearing my high m/c boots, heavy jeans, leather jacket and helmet. Of course ... I'm somewhat relaxed in the helmet area as I stick with the less safe open face helmets (but not shorties).

If ya want to know what it was like, put your dominant hand behind your back then put your tennis shoes on and tie them (keep that dominant hand behind your back!!!) with your weak hand.

Some of these kids do get me po'ed. First time they slide a bit they'll learn real quick that the first thing to hit the pavement is their unprotected paws, followed by the rest of their soon to be roadrashed carcass. You ride like I do, except I use the old turtle shell for a helmet. 'Course my old rigid frame Harley spits enough oil off the chain that anything other than a black shirt and jeans show spots everywhere.

Yep, Roy, I can only imagine what it's like (fortunately for me since I've never had a stroke), but I have a pretty good idea since I've known a lot of folks who've had them; most recently, my mother.

Rice Rockets
Well, I guess someone better come to the defense of the rice rockets. I ride one. My wife rides one. Among the peer group, the kids that you mention (wheelies/short/t-shirt) are known as "squids" for the way they ride fast, then splat. "Squid" is used as a derogatory remark, pretty much like the "N" word. The squids are a small minority of sportbike riders. The majority of the riders are responsible riders just like my wife and I. We ride as if we want to live to see another day. The full race leather I wear cost $1200, my boots, $250, my helmet $580, my glooves $100. I wear all of this gear every time I get on the bike, no exceptions. Same with my wife, same with the other responsible riders. With the advanced handling, braking and power that is available, along with the safety gear, these rice rockets are actually the safest bikes on the road. BUT they have to be used responsibly, by responsible riders. My bike, a Kawasaki ZX12R, has 178hp with out ram air in effect, dynos 164hp at the rear wheel, stock, is electronicly limited in speed to 187mph, does 85mph in first gear, and the quarter mile in the mid nines. You will not live if you don't ride this bike with level head. You don't take chances, you don't screw around.
I cringe at the thought of wearing an open face helmet or no helmet. Tests have shown that jeans are only good for three feet of sliding on asphalt, thats only three feet more protection than the squid with shorts. But this is the good 'ol USA so you get to make your own choices (thank God) and I harbor no ill feelings for the helmetless ride on the Harley. But the squids do piss me off because of the bad reputation the rest of us sport bikers get and all of their accidents raise my insurance costs.
I remember reading something about the highest fatality rates on motorcycles is the 45 + year olds, who used to ride many years ago and are now returning to motorcycling. This group is on cruisers, both Harley and imports, not sport bikes. The best thing for this group and any other new motorcyclist is to take the MSF Safety Course.
Those "custom" helmets with the dragon slayers, ect., are usually standard off the shelf replica helmets, factory produced with the same graphics as the sponsored racers. They are typically in the $600-$900 range.
P.S.- I wave at ALL motorcyclists, except for squids.

It never ceased to amaze me when my buds and I would go riding and one guy always left his helmet behind because it "would mess up his hair".
I always thought that if he ever dropped his bike he was gonna get to see how bad his hair could _really_ get messed up.
p.s.... My helmet saved me from a broken jaw and probably a concussion once. And my hair was a lot less messed up than it would have been if I had left half of my scalp on that highway.
It never ceased to amaze me when my buds and I would go riding and one guy always left his helmet behind because it "would mess up his hair".
I always thought that if he ever dropped his bike he was gonna get to see how bad his hair could _really_ get messed up.
p.s.... My helmet saved me from a broken jaw and probably a concussion once. And my hair was a lot less messed up than it would have been if I had left half of my scalp on that highway.

Sir, I apologize and stand corrected. My reference was to the squids, not the scoots, or to other sensible riders. I've riden for 30 plus years (geezuz that's spooky to see in print) both street and competition, Harley and Jap. And heck, for the price and availability, if I were buying now I'd more than seriously consider a rice grinder V-twin over the now fashion statement HD. I guess it just seems the squids are more noticable since they gravitate to the lay on the tank, road racing style high revving rice rockets. But then again, when I'm on the boat I see the same thing on the rivers with the JetSki's. Not everyone mind you, but there is a squid gravitation to the same style high revving water scoot.

My opinion of these hooligans can not be stated here on this board. These (censored) (censored) are the main reason the general public sees sportbikes the way they do. They go around raising all kinda (censored) and filming it to sell in video to other (censored) (censored). The same (censored) thing is happening with snowmobiles.

only one (minor) disagreement and that's on the safety comment. I drive a wannabe sport bike (well, it sure handles like one) an '02 GL1800A .... and I'd say that the ABS brakes sure add to the braking powr.
I will admit that I don't always wear leather pants (not for going to work, not short trips for shopping and such) ... but anything longer than 1/2 hour usually means the open road and leather pants or chaps. The leather jacket is always on as is the helmet ...
