I have had it happen. Also one morning I came in to my shop and smelled something like a battery being overcharged. Got to checking and one of the battery's on my truck was so hot you could not touch it. Got it unhooked and drug it out side

My Tacoma is five years old next month. This reminds me to change the battery soon. Many batteries just fail like yours did.

yep - Had one yesterday happen just like that on one of my mowers. Fine the day before, then yesterday... dead. Fortunately it was a cheap battery, certainly not worth the time to try to restore it. My total effort was to try to fast charge it but it would only take a half charge, and then only hang in there for about 10 seconds.

I'd sure love to have a battery that lasted 20 years as some have owned. Seven years has been my max.

Sometimes a sudden battery failure is due to an internal short. It doesn't happen often with modern batteries, but it's not unheard of.

The new batteries are made with a lead rivet connecting the plates in cells. should a rivet not get compressed properly it will fail.

because of the large amount of explosive hydrogen gas produced, you don't want to make any sparks inside the shop. the best way to disconnect the charger is to turn off the breaker for the shop outside the shop or inside the house, where ever that breaker is.. then you can safely disconnect the charger..

I had a year old battery go bad suddenly because the post came off. I didn't realize until after replacing it that the old one had been sliding around on the tray. Luckily it happened in my field as I was checking the chickens... my other truck happened to be parked there so I just threw my gear in it and went to work.
