It's pretty simple isn't it. Ethanol = welfare for farmers and companies like ADM. What's even worse and less well known - The subsidies for the "blenders." Know who "blends" gasoline? Yep, the oil companies.

The only losers here are the consumers...

Alot of people are putting most of their eggs into the ethanol basket, pretty soon all those people and basketfull's of eggs will be gone and we'll be drilling ANWR because some nit wit will claim that corn was an ecosystem for some endangered annoying insect or larvae that shields us from global warming and then we will screw the Caribou. Further subsidising of oil production, ethanol production is disgusting seeing that milk prices are capped.

All depends how much of the food source you have. Not long ago there was a huge glut of corn and most other grains. When you have a glut, I see nothing wrong with using it for fuel.
Converting food to fuel takes food out of someone's mouth. And no one in their right mind would build a plant if they only were going to get grain when there was a glut, it's all a stupid idea. A society that wont drill in ANWR for fear of harming the environment but will not only take food out of someone's mouth to convert it to fuel but also subsidize it has problems.

thumbs up MIKE

Now if the president would step up, lol
oh right he is going to the Olympics lol

But seriously we need something more than this to 'fix' it.

2) Neither one of those can supply anywhere close to US fuel demand. Even cellulosic is iffy, and that's only if it can be commercialized.

We're never going to be able to "grow" fuel...we use WAY too much. We'd have to plant every available acre just to grow the "fuel plants".

Transportation as we know it will be ending soon. We can't all drive 300 HP vehicles with the oil supply decreasing. I don't know where we'll end up...but it will be really different.

Cheap energy has begun a downward spiral. It's already begun to affect other things. I hope you enjoyed the good times...

I agree with everyone....Now if we could make fuel out of ticks and chiggers....hmmmm

300 horsepower is unnaceptable, 600 horsepower would be better:D

Poverty, famine and violence are among the supposed products of the theorized global warming in the future.

Yet these calamities are with us today now thanks to a key element of left wing "green" policy -> biofuels.

This feel-good measure is rapidly becoming a real-world disaster.

It's no coincidence that the U.S. and the EU, which are leading the biofuel charge, both have huge powerful multinational ag lobbies that see this latest eco-craze as a new way to milk taxpayers.

And the libs all thought that big oil was the problem.......when in reality biofuels are just another special-interest scam from the rich and powerful Enviro-AgIndustrial complex.

Everywhere I look, I see people who could afford to give up all food for 6 months. Ethanol is a chicken vs. egg issue. How do you start getting to market, vehicles which can burn fuel other than gasoline?

Go to Brazil, ethanol is ALL they use. Made from any and all crops. I'm using it now in my Chevys. You can't do this with that many other vehicles. The problem of using corn goes away if you could use alfalfa or even better sugar cane. But: you can now buy a cooker and a press to make your own ethanol with 3 - 5 acres of corn. Corn that grows in my backyard up here in the cold North. Ethanol that mixes with gasoline. Ethanol that works with my road vehicles without rotting the seals out and will always start. Oh, and passes Federal emissions standards.

Most people who you will talk to don't even know how many gallons are in a barrel of oil, or how many gallons of 87 octane gas you can get from a barrel of oil, and which country's oils can't be used to make gasoline (BTW: Irag is one of them). Until you know all the elements and problems in going to a non-gasoline transportation system mode, you should shut up and go find out the truths and realities of this situation. For all of you worried about the people starving in other parts of the world, I dare you to name just one of them. We supposedly taught the world to grow their own food. They squandered these lessons and chose to grow more people instead. The Asians put heavy tarriffs on our beef to save their balance of payments. Sooooooooo, now is the time for payback. Start with alt. fuels, go to a hydrogen economy in steps, use ethanol in the interim. And let's take care of ourselves first. BTW: biodiesel is the second front runner, but our current emissions standards pretty much prohibit its use because they favor emissions over fuel economy. Do your homework before you begin bloviating.

GM worked on and produced an all electric car when California agreed to provide infrastructure to charge them at 'filling' stations all over the state. When the cars showed up, California said: sorry, we didn't get it done. Now GM will try it again. Its developed with Panasonic a safe battery that holds a reasonable amount of energy. But Toyota has bought up parts of Panasonic to prevent GM from using it. They have the cash, provided by Americans, to bite us back.

So I say that some of you ought to now enjoy the 'benefit' from food price increases, food rationing, and the cost of replacing your Prius batteries. (They are due to be replaced about now).

Enjoy !

Where did you hear that the oil supply is decreasing? The largest oil field in North America is know to exist in North Dakota. What about ANWR? Saudi Arabia isn't running out of oil, they're just being capitolistic in profit taking.

We've allowed tree hugging, tofu eating enviro-libs to dictate our national energy policy and now we have to pay the piper.
