I found some of the heavier than water wood the other day while removing an old Hawthorne

Nasty Hawthorne 010.jpg

I could tell when the loader lifted it that it seemed a little heavy for such a small tree- anyway cut off 2 pieces one from the base and one from a ways up the tree and they both sank right to the bottom, Nasty Hawthorne 013.JPG

glad to be rid of this tree it is almost as thorny as my favorite tree/bush to hate (thorn apple)...

certain trees are definitely heavier than water.

Hi Bullet, how has the grapple been doing for you? I didn't even want to ask in the other thread because it had ended up in a pissing match like so many other good threads do. I really like the design, but I need to have more opening like 40" for 3 reasons. 1 when loading wood by hand the lid is out of the way, 2 for grappling stumps and 8' logs you can get a bigger bite out of the pile, 3 you can use the unit as a rake with the lid out of the way. I also want to see if they will either build me the parts or the whole grapple as a HD 50" model. 400-500lbs would not bother me as I am basically the same lift capacity as you but I like the narrow grapple to get through the woods better. Anyway just curious on how it has been doing? Thanks. CJ

The grapple is doing great. I highly recommend it to anyone with a compact considering a grapple. I have dug out several small stumps with it and a few large ones. The bigger stumps that I have dug out with it were up rooted by a storm. I think in most cases if you need grapple to handle a stump that is larger than 30'' your tractor probably will not handle it. Most of the time big stumps have a lot of dirt on them and they are very heavy. If you have a decent sized pile of firewood the grapple does pretty good at moving it. If you have a small pile you are better off to load the grapple by hand.
