I have a '70s vintage Cub Cadet 1000 that I've been using since last summer for mowing. It ran fine until recently and now it bogs down and stalls out when I run it up a grade. I thought it was the fuel filter but it turns out there isn't one. Then I thought bad gas. I drained some gas from the fuel line and it looked OK, but I drained the entire tank and added fresh gas from another source. No improvement. Could I have crud in the fuel intake to the carb or is there another possibility?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would install an in line filter since you say there is none. I would disassemble the carb and clean it. Change spark plug(s)

Could also be points and condenser. I recall once a buddy of mine at college had an old Chevy LUV 4X4. It ran great until you put a load on it and then it would just putter out and have no power. We pulled our hair out and finally changed the points, cap, and condenser after replacing about everything else (wires, filters, plugs). That was the ticket. Ran great after that.

Thanks. I'll check those possibilities this weekend.
