What a great help this forum is to we uninformed diy'ers...I'm working on a swapped 18 hp flathead, opposed twin, 42a707 briggs engine that I replaced my poulan pro 22 hp vanguard with...I have rebuilt carb, removed gas tank and cleaned out and replaced fuel line. new plugs and fuel filter. It will start and run at idle but when I raise the rpms rapidly it dies. It will restart with choke and runs if I very slowly increase the speed even to wide open. It has the carb mounted fuel pump and it seems there is real good flow. I have not yet hooked up the alternator wiring cause I'm still not sure how to do it on this mower cause the original had a regulator and this engine doesn't. Someone said I could just connect it to the battery positive wiring but I'd like to continue using my key ignition and not do the toggle switch stuff. Question is; could the wire not being in the loop be the problem ?
