engine surging

my 1861 cub with kohler engine surging at half throttle, if i go any lower than half throttle it dies ?

Does it run better with the choke closed?

If yes I would start by checking the fuel flow and carburetor. If this has a fuel pump check the line from the tank to the fuel for being weather checked and cracked. This can allow air to be sucked in even though the hose is not leaking yet.

Would also check to see if the carb is dirty. Possibly some of the jets are partially plugged.

I was thinking leaking hose or gasket letting air in also.
