I have a Kubota 2350, and was wondering about engine oil, I use Rotella 15w-40 in my pickup truck, and was thinking I could use the same oil in my tractor.

What ya think?

Lots of strong personal opinions about oils, but yes, in my personal opinion, if Rotella 15W-40 is what you're using in your truck, I'd use it in the tractor. Personally, I used Chevron's Delo 400 15W-40, but all the farmer neighbors I knew used one or the other of those two. They're both good.

Simplify your life.

I run Shell Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 in my Chev 2500 HD diesel, Kubota BX 24, BMW R1150 RT, Yamaha FJR1300, JD 265, Honda 50 and 15 HP outboards, Chev Suburban, Ariens snowblower, Honda Rubicon 500 ATV, Honda 6500 Generator, and Craftsman 22" lawnmower. Never had a problem and never will.

Now go pleasure the Mrs. and forget about this issue for the rest of your life.

P.S. You may want to keep a small jar under the bed like I do.

^^ That's funny right there. (My own Mrs. has trouble with cold start-ups.) :D

Rotella is good 'nuff stuff.

Kubota 2350,
Not all engine oils are rated for use in deisel engines, so you may want to check the label closely before pouring in just anything. I did a double check and it does appear that the Rotella does specify both gas and diesel use.

I have been using the Chevron Delo 400, 15W-40, in my BX23 since new.

Here's the deal with my 6 Kubota diesels.... the three my wife runs get Delo 400 and the three I run get Rotella we will see in a few years who wins. (LOL)

If ya ever go into any truck stop there are two kinds of oil...Rotella & Delo, they make their livin with their truck.

I also run Rotella in everything but my chainsaw, weed eater & air compressor.

Back about 4 years ago I was at a trade show where the Shell oil people had a booth. I told the sales rep. I used Rotella in my Kubota and in my car and truck which were gas powered engines. He told not to use Rotella in the gas fueled engines as it was designed for diesel engines.

I don't know what the big difference would be but I followed his suggestion. I thought that oil designed for diesel engines would be a better oil for gas engines too. It sure would be easier to have one kind of oil on hand. I have noticed that the newer automobile engines are using a lower viscosity oil than which I believe is only to meet the fuel mileage standards.

You are absoutely correct on the lower viscosity & fuel mileage thing.
I don't why that guy said that, here is what their web site says.

I have used Rotella T in my diesel powered boat for years with great results. The marine environment is very harsh and the engine performed well. As a result of this experience I will be using Rotella T in my tractor. Its a great product.

Rotella 15w-40 is what most people around here use for their diesel trucks and tractors, I use Rotella 5W-40 in my tractor because I only change the oil once a year and the 5W seems to start better in cold weather. In my Ford truck I use the recomended 5W-20, with the Ford V10 overhead cams the thinner oil gets up there faster. Both Rotella 5W-40 and 15W-40 are rated for gasoline and diesel engines.

I neglected to mention that synthetic oil is not recommended until the appropriate break-in period has been reached.

Well I'll speak up. The owners manual recomends 10w-30 and thats what I stick with in my BX2350. I am using Kubota brand, but anything would work as long as its meant for diesel engines. Its kind of hard to find in other brands so thats why I stick with the Kubota stuff. The long standing tradition has always been 15w-40 for diesels, but hey Kubota makes the tractor so I stick with what they recomend.

David, I agree that it's always a good idea to go with what the manufacturer recommends. But sometimes, the manufacturer (in this case Kubota) may be a bit behind in updating their English language manuals. I know my Kubotas also recommended 10W-30, CC/CD, oil. CC/CD ratings are a bit obsolete. So every dealer I talked to, as well as one Kubota factory rep, said 15W-40 was good, in Texas at least. I'd say 10W-30 CC/CD is the minimum you should use.

Shell does also produce a Rotella 10w-30 . I'm thinking of using this on my next change from Kubota 10w-30 as opposed to using the Rotella 15w-40.

I wasn't aware the Rotella 10W-30 is qualified as a diesel engine lubricant.

I use Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5W-40 100% synthetic oil in my B7610. IMO I wouldn't use anything but a 100% synthetic oil, but to each his own.

I used to think that I would use all synthetic too, but this weekend I went looking for my usual Rotella T 5W-40 for my annual oil change. But all the places I went either quit selling it or was sold out. There was no synthetic 5w-40s available so I ended up with Rotell 15W-40. So instead of spending $30 for enough oil for one oil change I spent $24 for enough oil for two changes. I don't know what happened to the supply of the synthetic oils? The first place I went had Mystik JT-8 synthetic blend 15w-40 but I kept looking for full synthetic.
