John Deere 5303
I just spoke to my dealer last night. He said that JD was discontinuing the 5003 line. Deere is apparently being very hush hush about what it will be replaced with, although it is thought that there will be more cab options on the succeeding line.

He also said that if you don't currently have a deal inked for a current 5003 series, that you probably won't get one. Not only that, but you'd be lucky to get its replacement by the end of the year. In a related note, Denver Int'l airport is trying to order eight of the smaller 7000 series JD's and doesn't understand why they can't get them until Feb 2009.

He also said that tractor prices are likely to go through the roof in the next couple months. Raw materials and freight are clobbering the tractor industry. High ag demand doesn't help us consumers either.

My guess is that the 5003 series retirement is largely being driven by emissions. The current Powertech 2.9L is a tier 2 motor.

I have a 5303 on order that should be here in a week or two. Now I'm kind of torn:

1. I hope the replacement isn't too snazzy, so that I'm not disappointed with my 5303.
2. JD will have only offered the 5003 series with MFWD for about one year. I'm a little concerned about owning an oddball in JD history as far as parts availability goes.
2. If the succeeding line is a ground up redesign, I'll be glad not to have purchased the first year build of the new model.
3. I suspect the new models will be substantially more expensive.
4. I suspect the new models will have substantially more complex engine management and emissions controls.

Based on these factors, I think it's best that I stick with my 5303 order. Am I on track here?

Myself, I would stick with the order you've already placed. The tractor you are purchasing now fits the needs you have already envisioned. The big downsides to ordering the new model are time and money. It will take more time to get the tractor and the tractor will cost a lot more.

If you're worried about the 5303 not being snazzy enough, you can always step up to the 5025 series. :D

I doubt parts will be an issue, the 5x03 series is basically the 5000/10/20 series tractors that were initially introduced in 1991.

Not *that* snazzy. I would be way too spoiled.

Has the mighty Powertech 2.9L 3-cyl remained basically unchanged during that time? I like the idea of running a unit who's motor had a 17 year production run.

The only major change that I'm aware of is that this year's engines are all turbo'd for emissions compliance.

did he say when they were going to quit with them? this is all news to me because every paper i pickup around here, there are major deals going on with the 5103 tractor right now. i also thought i remembered hearing someone on here say the 5003 series was one of JD's best selling series of tractors, not to mention the best at not having many warranty claims. well, i guess if this turns out to be gospel, and what he says is right, it's either hello used tractor(been eyeing a few) or either hello 5025 series. it's just my luck, i have been looking at getting a new tractor for a couple years now, and just about when i think i'll have the money saved up by a certain time to make a BIG downpayment, the prices go up substantially because of the crappy economy. not to mention with gas prices, buying a tractor from too far away and having it shipped, is also a concern and will limit my range of area i can look in:mad:

I can't say that this is the truth with 100% certainty, but I am inclined to believe it. I was talking to the owner of one of the larger dealerships in Denver. This was not something he said casually in passing. We actually talked about it for about 15 minutes. Furthermore, he had nothing to gain by telling me this. In fact, I thought it was a little odd that he was telling me that Deere is ending the series after I've just committed to buying one from him.

I think my best advice would be for you to drop whatever you are doing and drive straight to your dealership and see what kind of a deal you can do on the tractor you want, even if it means financing a little more than you intended. Also, ask him about Deere retiring the 5003 series. I don't know what motive he would have for not being forthright with you.

My dealer also said that they've already seen 6% price increase since the beginning of the year and that's just the beginning. I'm not trying to sound overly dramatic. I'm just thinking that now might not be the time for indecisiveness.

i would deffinatley do that, BUT there's a problem that's holding me back from going to talk to my dealer, or send Nathan Gamble a PM on here asking for his best price. i am trying to get rid of a truck that i bought for my mother back in March. she isn't able to drive anymore, and i already have a truck, so keeping it is of no use to me. i still owe $13,500 on it. i am trying my best to sell it but as you all know, now is the worst time to be selling anything. the truck gets 24+mpg, and that's still not helping any. i've had a few bites, but no real interest in it. sometimes i wonder to myself why people bother calling about the truck and asking questions that the add CLEARLY explains, knowing they aren't going to call me back like they say and knowing they aren't THAt interested in the first place. i guess i know how dealers feel now. the day i sell the truck and pay off the loan, you can bet the next day i will be at my dealer talking to him, and sending Nathan Gamble a message on here.

Sad but true. We ordered a 5303 just to get one ordered before there done. Replacemnets have been rumored to be out to FEB of 2009. The middle of June is the cut off. If yo udon't get one by then you'll have to wait till next year.

The whole 5000 series line-up will be "re-worked" and rebadged...there might also be some new additions to the CUT line (have to keep this quiet now boys)...so yeah the 5X03 series as we know it will be gone but there will be tractors VERY similar to them in the new line-up with different numbers. We placed our last orders yesterday, we will have plenty to round out the season and maybe even a few left at the end of the year that would make for some great deals.

Last year was Deere's major revamp of their AG line, this year comes their CUT/Utility line...stayed tuned for more updates!!
