My biggest complaint with the kobalt line that might not be their fault is virtually all the sockets at Lowe’s are 12 point. Might as will name them nut strippers. When I have to return something I usually just go buy a new one and take the old one back in its packing and receipt. It’s a lot less hassle that way.

Another great point. I never use a 12 point socket on something tight. I use a 6 point almost all the time, particularly on anything tight. I have 12 point sockets because they came with the sets back in the day. They are fine for most duties, but not for hard wrenching.

yep, I had rather use a 6 pt socket too. Problem is, they are hard to find for some reason.
I needed a certain size mm socket. Went to many auto parts stores. For so me reason all they stock is 12 pt.
I finally found the socket at NAPA

I don’t understand why 12 point are so common. I’ve never even seen a bolt that wasn’t 6 point except some 4 side stuff. I’ve heard 12 point bolts exist but I’ve heard the same for big foot.

Sockets were around for a very long time before ratchets were common. They often had 12 or 8 points to allow work in tighter areas than 6 or 4 would allow. Still useful if you have to use a flex-handle in a tight space.

Do any of your box end wrenches have 6 point holes?

NAPA, that's where I go for any 6Pt socket I want. I also use my impact socket set at times, which are 6 Pts of course, with a regular ratchet wrench or breaker bar.

Haror Freight's impact socket sets, can't beat the price and when on sale or with 20% off coupon, even better yet. S.A.E. and metric sets, regular and deep well sockets. Never had any fail.

I have to give HF sockets credit where credit is due. They’re pretty decent especially for the price.

Yeah reading through this thread it seems too many of us are breaking a lot of ratchets, sockets, etc. :confused3:

I did learn my lesson long ago putting a cheater pipe on the end and breaking a craftsman ratchet mechanism. I knew at the time it was a lifetime warranty but felt guilty after the exchange realizing I misused the tool. I habitually take good care and storage of my tools and don't break them now probably because over time I have acquired enough of the right tools for the job. :dance1:

Never had anything but craftsman sockets ratchets never broke anything. Decades of use. Breaker bars are meant for breaking things loose not ratchets.
