[emoji637] ton Ram-single vs dual wheel?

I'm not sure how much squat would be different on a 1 ton SRW vs DRW. .

It’s a lot of difference. I can put 2 pallets on the dually bed about the same as the single wheel handles one. If you’re comparing legal payloads which 2 pallets is not you’ve probably still got a 2x difference. My ram GVW is 14,000 and a single wheel ton is 11,700. Without changing the truck weight by much that’s a lot of difference.

I am torn here- never owned a dually, have heard they can be bit troublesome to park and navigate around tight spaces. This will be our tow vehicle, towing anywhere from 8k to 20k lbs. Other than some stability, what am I losing going with single wheel over dually?
Tire replacement $ and rotation is a factor too.

My 1T 1996 two valve dually flatbed had 19.5s. There seemed to be no limit to how much that pickup was loaded to carry/pull. Oh wait, its automatic transmission.... Yup, that cursed transmission was the limitation through out the time I owned it. To the tune of 4 transmission rebuilds. I hear that manual transmissions/clutches died an early life too. Gotta love that Cummins. It had no respect for transmissions. Propane injection didn't help.

As for the duals vs single aspect other than the single rears mushing and swaying, in mud and deep snow the dual rears didn't necessarily follow the path cut by the fronts. And with no load the rear surface print per square inch was 50% less with hydro planing or wandering an annoyance. My dually weighed in above 8k+ empty. Yup. Hydro P was a thing.

Loved those big Dana axles and a suspension to match.

Another +1 on a dually here! Towing is a lot less "white" knuckle with a dually.
Thuren alignment specs really help in front end wander! Tire wear improves also. Play with tire psi for ride comfort when empty. I run 65 front and 50 in the rears unloaded. When towing or payload in bed, inflate to the needed psi for weight. Load tables are your friend! View attachment Thuren Alignment Specs.pdf

Thanks guys. This is exactly the input I was looking for. We will probably go with a Ram as we have owned a couple and are most familiar with them. What I am finding surprising is the prices of the srw vs dually is very close, talking maybe a few hundred apart.
Yep, you get a lot more truck for a little less money.
Smart man choosing Ram.

The transmissions are no longer an issue. The Aisin, Allison, etc. transmissions have been excellent.

Uh yeah…injecting propane that instantly puts 200 ft lbs of torque through the driveline isn’t good for a transmission.

That can be cured with good quality siped tires.

One of the best parts!

In the Dodge Ram line up, is the width for a cab and chassis version slightly narrower than for a one with the regular body? If I understand their specs correctly, it can also vary moving up to the 5500/6500 models?
Not only is a C&C about six inches narrower, you can get 74 gallon stock fuel capacity and some other odds and ends that are nice.

About the only potential downside is their derated engine, but mine deals okay with up to a 39,000 CGVW here in the Rockies.

Yes.

Usually derated more on HP than on TQ.
Hasn’t really been a problem for me-even at 48,000LB GCWR.

Another different angle ... I'm a long distance truck driver, and quite a few companies have spec'd there trucks and trailers with "super singles" ... One wide 50 series tire to take the place of the duals ... The wheels have no offset, and used on standard axles ... The reason is for fuel economy.

I call them "silly singles" and won't drive a truck or trailer with them on, they do reduce the overall sidewall to sidewall measurement by a bit ... If one blows out, you can't "limp it in", and if you got to put chains on, they are very heavy and awkward to put on ... Same reason I have "singles" to put on each of my duals, easier to handle ...

Many semi-trucks though are going down the road with only 10 tires, instead of the much more common 18 tires ...
