Hi!

Thinking about converting the 861 to use the "ignitor" system from Yesterday's Tractors. It replaces the points/condenser. Anyone done this? Results?

I have used the Pertronix version in an old chev. You will probably have to change the coil too, depending on the resistance the module needs. You will have to retime the distributer, so have a gun handy. Way better than points.

Yeah...that's the brand Yesterday's sells. Tractor Parts Express sells a Motorcraft kit...interesting...

I see the attraction to an electronic ignition, but as long as I can pickup a set of points and condenser from my New Holland dealer for about $12 vs $130 or so for the electronic, I guess my 861 will be living with points. :)

Good thoughts...do most CNH dealers stock the points and condenser? I saw some posts on other forums that say Tisco points are junk?

I think my dealer stocks something different than Tisco, but I have not bought any recently so I don't remember. Apparently the set I am running have been some good ones. In your thread http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/ford-vintage-tractors/278695-thoughts-ford-861-a.html , look at post #2 that Soundguy posted. He gave you a list of parts including some quality Napa points for that 861. I think there is also a part number for a set of Standard as well. You would do well to follow his advice on these old Fords.

them napa and other ponts numbers are for good premium points. some o fhte best ones cost up to 18$ but you get years on them.

if you do go EI.. start with a running tractor and then install it.. that way if you hit a snag you can drop the old plate back in and go when the expensive one fails on ya.. or you hook the batter up backwards for a second..e tc.

ditto on following the advice for whatever coial and or resistor it wants.
