hey orezok ! I have them in 3 classic automobiles & I put in a 1977 Bayliner with 4 cylinder Volvo / Penta outdrive! Talk about it working in extreme conditions. & not one failure on these apps. Anyhow this is for the Ford Vintage tractor owners who are tired of points & want to upgrade to electronic Ignition to make there tractors more efficient & reliable ( Pertronix )

I'm not an advocate of EI on 6 volt systems. The voltage sensitivity of the pickups coupled with potential system voltage drop while cranking add up to a vulnerability to no-starts. Convert your 6v system to 12v negative ground, then add EI.
Pertronix offers stellar tech support and customer service so where you buy Pertronix EI kits is fairly irrelevant.

Hey RickB ! Very good point but this will work with a 6 volt! But a conversion to a 12 volt is preferable & this is recommended for working tractors that are used year round for ignition reliability & without ever having to use points again & the price can't be beat by CBS performance they're one of the leading wholesalers of Pertronix & have been for 25 years & don't forget free shipping ,So it is relevant to whom you buy it from & this is not something you have to have but it is a great alternative to points IMHO.

EI works more reliably on 12v systems. Fact. Not because of the EI kit itself but the operating characteristics of some 6v systems make the use of EI less than a sure thing, especially with worn starters and ancient battery cables that lead to high current draw and voltage drop. Pertronix 6 volt EI WILL NOT WORK CONSISTENTLY BELOW 5.2 volts.
I have sold Pertronix EI kits through my work for years and installed my first in about 1995.

I did state that a 12 volt conversion is preferable & that it is a good point on the 6 volt & I would hope anybody that uses a vintage tractor would have everything up to par if they where using it on a regular bases for reliable performance & your point on a 6 volt is well taken!

Yeah, that's wishful thinking. EI is too often used as a universal BandAid, which it is not.

And your point is??????????

His point is to many times EI is put on to cover up other issues with a worn engine. I like EI and think it has its place but I will not have it on a tractor of mine. I have had conversations with to many folks that have converted from points to EI and have been left with a sitting tractor when the EI failed. One man I spoke with last year was installing his 4th after the 3rd one had failed on a machine that he installed new wiring and made a good clean install, yet they still failed.

Anyone who can read and understand the wear on a set of points can have a very reliable ignition system. A system that if something should go wrong in the field that can generally be fixed good enough to get back to the barn with a simple screwdriver instead of being stuck in the field with a burned out part. The art of setting points ignition systems is a lost skill like so many other things now days, done right points will run for years without issue. Plus I can keep a spare set on hand and/or replace several sets of $10 points for the cost of one failed EI.
