At low RPM electrical light does not comeon, but at higher speed it comes on. ALT producing current. How do you test voltage regulator & whats the cost for a new one?

There really isn't a good way that I know of, or that is outlined in the service manual to test one. Generally when we test to see if the regulator is faulty we just hook a new one up. Email me at jdepratt@deprattequipment.com and I can get you a price on a new one.

Try the following to isolate the problem;
With a volt meter.......

1) check battery voltage (not running) should be at least 12.6

2) start, check battery voltage again.

3) connect volt meter to altenator (+ to "bat" terminal, - to ground) should be about 13.8

4) now compare the two voltages @running, they should be about the same.

5) with the meter still connected to the battery, turn on lights, if regulator is working, battery voltage should stay about 12.7 to 12.75

6) do the same test with the lights with the meter connected to the alt. the voltage should increase. If not then you have a bad regulator or you have a bad diod in the altenator.

Most altenators rely on a little voltage to make voltage, this is done via an "exciter" wire from the regulator which gets its voltage from the key switch. Check to make sure the connection to the regulator is tight, un-plug it and plug it back in. (if it's seperate from alt.) If it's built in to the alt., some are adjustable. I hope this helps, if not disregard! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

There are 2 wires with equal markings that come out of the alt, how due you tell the + from the - ?

On my CK20 the regulator is in the altenator, but all most always the "BAT" terminal is the one with the thick RED wire with a "boot" covering the terminal, BLACK is the altenator GROUND. Is there a label on your altenator that says: "IC regulator internal"?

IF YOU TAKE A VOLT METER ON THE TWO WIRES ON ALT.
UN HOOK. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHICH WIRE IS + OR -
START TRACTOR WITH BOTH WIRES UNHOOK AND HOOK ONE TO POS. LEAD ON VOLT METER AND THE OTHER WIRE
TO NEG LEAD ON VOLT METER AND AT HIGH RPM SHOULD READ ABOUT 30V. IF IT READ 30V THEN MOST LIKELY BE
REG.
