I doubt that an electric fence would even slow a bear down. Little things like that don't bother them very much. :)

In fact the USFS has been using electric fencing for bear control for many years now, it deters them from raiding back-packers packs in several wilderness areas, including Yellowstone! ;)

You probably need something bigger to scare them off :p

i use an electric fence for my beehives after a bear attack a couple of years ago. seems to work. you need > 5k volts and it has to be easily seen by the bear. some people bait the fence with bacon.

What about a big dog?
I watched a show where BC wildlife workers would release bears.
They had big dogs which would chase them off.

Friends of mine are beekeepers and use electric fences on battery with a solar panel to keep the battery up. They are pleased with how that works for them.

I live in the Northern Rockies and they just had a clinic in the next town on bear fencing for grizzlies. Look on the Gallagher web site or just google "electric fences for bear" ad you should get some recommendations. It's my understanding they are very effective. A friend has an apple orchard and he had problems with black bears so he put up electric fencing and reduced a lot of damage.

In the past year they have put electric fence up around our dump to keep the bears out. Seems to work fine. It is what is known as the "high tensile" wire fence with the high voltage fencer, same as my BIL uses for his cattle. A few branches touching it might lower the voltage a bit, but the voltage doesn't die the way the old battery "boing-boing" fencers did.
The wire itself also is pretty strong even without the jolt....

We used electric fence for years around our seasonal beehives on the cranberry farm, never had a hive get cracked after putting the fence up. used a fence charger that ran on a deep-cycle car battery.

Any fencer for horses should work on bears. Get one that'll do 25 miles of fence and shock thru weeds. The jolt that theses animals get has nothing to do with the volts going through them but rather the unpleasant surprise of the mild unexpected tap they get that surprises the heck out of them enough to turn tail. In other words they are shocked more psychologically than physically. If these things can do a thousand pound horse, a bear should pose little problem. They'll knudge it with their little wet nose and get very surprised and off they'll go.
