I doubt that an electric fence would even slow a bear down. Little things like that don't bother them very much. :)

In fact the USFS has been using electric fencing for bear control for many years now, it deters them from raiding back-packers packs in several wilderness areas, including Yellowstone! ;)

We just had a problem with a bear in the past week. Went into the chicken run and had its head inside the chicken door. A bit of yelling and a shotgun blast in its general direction it took off pretty quick. This week it or another one was back chasing our free range chickens. Called the BC conservation officer and they suggested an electric fence as the only real solution to keep them away from the barn and coop. Any other type of fence they will just go over or through. Our problem is most of our property is fairly well treed with lots of underbrush. So to put up 1,000 ft or more of fence is near impossible. After every wind storm probably branches will be on it or have broken the wire. Also to keep the brush back from grounding it out would also be a real pain. Electrics fence do work but if they really want in they will still go through one. In Kamloops the lack of brush should make installing an electric fence much easier. Pic is of the chicken door the bear had its head in. :)

British Columbia has the largest Black Bear population in North America and Vancouver Island has the densest population of bears in the entire province.
OPPS that's where I live.

i use an electric fence for my beehives after a bear attack a couple of years ago. seems to work. you need > 5k volts and it has to be easily seen by the bear. some people bait the fence with bacon.

What about a big dog?
I watched a show where BC wildlife workers would release bears.
They had big dogs which would chase them off.
