A good guidebook will show the edibles, as well as anything which can be confused with them. Still, there are a lot of unsafe or untested species out there. Most puffballs are safe; ther only one my book says to stay away from is purple in the middle.

There are also numerous "rules of thumb"; but the only one I'm sure of is that if they're wrapped in cellophane, they should be safe. :<)

Still, it's a lot of fun.
