My high side utility trailer required either climbing atop the tongue and front toolbox or lowering the gate to gain access. I picked up this aluminum RV ladder section at a Goodwill store for $5. The first picture shows it clamped onto the trailer side as a test fit, I cut off the part shown at the top right and used sections of it to make the two top brackets. They fasten onto the trailer frame using 8 inch long quarter-inch threaded rod, and the bottom mount needed only two holes drilled for carriage bolts. Inside the aluminum tubing I added half-inch steel EMT pipe, which makes the ladder much stiffer. A side benefit is that the ladder protects the taillight.

tail light issue?

Not sure if you refer to me having a problem with damaged tail lights or if the ladder blocks the light, no to both.

ya seems to me that the ladder is blocking (some of) the light... which would likely be an issue for your local law enforcement if they were slow that day

Yes, it blocks part of the light, but my neighbor who is a city policeman (and who also borrows the trailer often) says there is little chance of being stopped or cited. He sees a LOT of trailers with no working lights. I am also in the stages of adding secondary stop and turning lights about mid-way up the rear gate for better visibility.

two_bit_score, thanks for the compliment...the trailer is a 6X12 "Legend" brand made in St. Johns. Michigan.

Nice job.

I need to do something like that to the front of my boat trailer.
