Ok all, trying to build my wife a ridding arena. I have a 60hp compact tractor. I was thinking of getting an over sized landscape roller to use on the three point to compact each layer. Any of you done this? Have any ideas? Am I way off base and should rent a small drive able roller? Thanks in advance for any and all ideas.

Lowe's, HD and TSC sell poly rollers which are filled with water. Shop on the internet.

I have an 18" diameter poly roller I pull behind my utility vehicle for rolling in grass seed. Roller smooths area between utility vehicle tires. Not heavy enough for your application.

Poly rollers must be emptied in the winter or anti-freeze added or they will split during a hard freeze.

24" diameter poly rollers in widths suitable for tractors are available.

A commercial vender of steel lawn rollers is Gandy in Minnesota.

Also consider Cultipackers. Less outlay per pound of weight.
Tractor 3 Point Hitch Cultipacker presses seeds into the worked ground and keeps the area from washing, also for breaking clods on plowed ground, making it easier to work and plant Cultipackers for tractors and ATV's at Everything Attachments.

A tow behind roller will help smooth the area. If you want compaction rent a rideable roller

What exactly are you doing for an arena? Are you digging out and putting in a gravel base? Just working with the base you have and need to smooth it out?

Locally we have a TON of clay. So when we are ready to build the out door arena I will dig down a few inches to remove the organic top soil. I will then want to smooth that base. Roller would be nice and I will likely buy or rent one. Then add some washed sand on top for good footing. I may also put down a layer of landscape fabric to help keep weeds down and prevent migration of rocks up and sand down.
