DX 40 PTO stuck in on and will not start !

The linkage below the fender is free but PTO lever will not disengage.

I have it in neutral but the motor will not crank

So the tractor will be setting out side tonight, it needs a bath any way

any help is great thanks

Newt, I'm not sure what you mean about the linkage. Is the lever working normally, but not going far enough to make the switch operate so the light goes out? There have been several instances where the hydraulic valve for the PTO binds up and won't move, but you seem to be saying that the linkage moves. There used to be an opening below the seat (after removal) that allowed you to see the PTO valve, but some of the later models don't have that. It's worth checking on your DX40.

Let me know what you find on the linkage/lever. I can tell you how to bypass everything and get your tractor started after you remove the PTO shaft. I think you can bypass the PTO switch. I need to check my schematic to be sure.

BTW: Is there a chance that Fuse #2 is blown? That makes the PTO light illuminate and the tractor won't start. If your lever is working but the PTO light stays on, check fuse #2. It is below your instrument panel. Remove the screws on the panel and lift it up. The fuses are on the left.

The yellow knob is froze in the engaged position . I see from a post back in 2010 that you said to clean and lube the linkage.
Now how do I get to the linkage ?The black plastic just below the 3 levers needs to come off but I had no luck in finding the screws to remove it last night .
The post from 2010 was talking about removing the seat but that was for a TC33 and I cant see it needing removed on a DX 40
I don't have a parts book or service manual.

The plastic side console is removed with bolts under the fender. I still think you need to remove the seat to see if there is a cutout below. I have one on my TC45D which is a deluxe model. Some of the later tractors don't have the cutout, but if you do, it will allow you to get to the PTO valve to see if it is bound up.

If you disconnect your PTO, then you can take two straight pins and put one in each wire to the PTO switch you can see by looking in beside the left rear tire. Once the pins are in place, but an alligator jumper wire between them and your tractor will start. You could also reach in there and wedge something into the switch to hold it closed since the lever is frozen. If you wedge the button down, the tractor should start so you can get it into a shop or shelter to work on. Either method should get you going, but the PTO will engage and turn as soon as the engine starts. That's why you need to disconnect anything from the PTO and stand clear of the stub.

BTW: This whole process of troubleshooting is much easier with the left rear wheel off. If it's not raining and you can jack up the rear and remove the wheel, looking for and fixing your problem will be far easier.
