Just for the record, one of the other guys wrecked his p/u and needed a vehicle. He bought the companies Duramax for 12K, which is the same thing I just paid for the 2000 Ford F350 with 7.3 with less miles and better maintance history. I like my truck a LOT more than his, so I am glad I held out.

Anything is worth the money if you can get it for the right price. The big thing to watch on the 2500 series GM trucks is the GVWR. With a heavy service body you could be at or near the max with noting on the hitch.

165,000 is not a lot for a diesel engine but is getting to be a lot on the rest of the truck. Plan on seal, ball joints, tie rods, bearings, ect.

i know i've seen you comment on this a lot of times in the past, and i agree that by having the diesel you are technically losing carrying capacity, but you should still have a reasonable number and not be at the limit when empty.

i have an 01 3500 dual rear wheel duramax with a good sized dump body and with the normal compliment of fuel and stuff stashed behind the seat it weighs in around 8400 (with me in it) i'd have to think that a single wheel with a service body would weigh less than that since it won't have the subframe, hydraulics, and the extra truck weight.

i don't have a 2500 dmax to know the actual weight, but based on the posted curb weights of 2011 trucks, a long bed standard cab dmax should weigh around 700lbs more than a regular cab crewcab gas truck. add that to the 6200~ish scale weight of my 2006 regular cab gas crew cab and you are somewhere in the ballpark of 7k with the driver. assuming that the truck is an hd then you should have a 9200gvw. add in the extra weight of a service body over a standard body and you are down under 2000 lbs payload. certainly a reduction, but not near the limit yet.

One of the major concerns for me when looking at that 2500 was carrying capacity, though most was the maintance history of the vehicle. Another was that particular year/engine combination seemed to have increased injector problems at or approaching 185K miles with inflated costs of changing them, a problem seemed to have been corrected in the following model years.
I was justifying a diesel pickup in order to be able to haul my tractor (approximate 7K) on a trailer behind the truck so carrying capacity was not typically needed. Since I drive for a living, keeping under the D.O.T radar is mandatory. I also had intentions of removing the bed at some point and replacing it with a standard pickup bed, hopefully at not much expense. With a service bed, I would be limited to bumper pull only, which didn't excite me. I prefer fifth wheel or gooseneck when pulling such heavy loads, and not sure if GM rates their trucks like Ford does, which limits bumper pulls to 10K max, but it seems like a good idea.

The gvwr on GM dmax srw trucks is 8,800# or 9,200#. My 05 weighed 7,400# with me in it. A service body will add about 1,000# easy. This will leave about 400 to 800# for tongue weight, cargo, or just people.

My Ford is limited to 15,000# no. It's a F350. F250 is limited to 12,000# bp.

The sheet I have from Ford that lists all the spec's for GVW and GCVW (I think for 2000 year model) has an asterisk for all the weights saying that it is fifth wheel trailer weights shown, for conventional towing, trailer weights should not exceed 10,000 pounds.

i would not take an lly duramax if it was given to me. In order to make emissions on that engine they had to change something up. Which would cause the truck to over heat. My buddy had a 2005 2500 super cab 4x4 and when he was pulling his 5th wheel trailer in the summer he had hellish over heat issues. I cant remember what he said they changed, all i know is what i was told

Intake was the big issue on them. I had one, a 05 3500, and it would overheat with 9,000# behind it.
