Dump trailers

I think my pronovost dump trailer might have been powder coated to. It's been over 30 years since we bought it and minus a half dozen paint chips missing it was really in great shape when I repainted it this spring to brighten the dulling red paint. It's always been parked outside in the weather but I do try to keep it empty. I think I could sell this trailer tomorrow for more than we paid for it new 30 years ago.

Anyone heard of Maxum dump trailers? I'm looking at a 7x14, 14K GVWR. I think an off-shoot of Cam. No powder coat, primer and polyerathane top coat, 10gauge floor, ramps, spare tire holder, remote, battery, D-rings, two pistions, brakes all around, 12" oc transverse deck support channels, two function swinging door and adjustable hitch coupler. $6200.

Any thoughts on quality?

Website says 5"x2" tube frame. I think most use 6" tube frame. I would check type of piston, like telescoping, wall thickness of the tube frame, power down or gravity down, gauge of sidewall metal, etc.

I looked at various brands for the past two years. Finally decided to build one with the features I like best. Went with a 6'6" x 12', 7 k Dexter axles, 10 guage metal and C channel through out. Need to wire it and install a jack. So far less than $1700.

Well, I pulled the trigger on a deck over dump. There is one option that is puzzling me though. I was hoping for a combo spread and barn door gate, but that option isn't available with the deck over and drop down sides. I can get the standard combo gate (hinge at the top and bottom) or just straight barn doors. I'm not carrying equipment in the trailer so that isn't a worry. Any thoughts as to what I should get? Will the chains on the combo gate get in the way of construction debris and brush? The barn door is a $140 option too. Thanks for any thoughts, Nick.

I have a Downeaster with the combo gate and it sucks when loading something into it by hand. I do fire wood and the barn doors would ge great for that, but when I get dirt and spread it in the yard, the combo gate is great. So I guess its up to you, whatever you use it for should influence your descission.

I like manual barn doors. They make you walk around to open/close the doors and you can check for debris on the fenders or see problems before they happen. It only takes a few seconds and you have to untarp covered loads by hand anyhow.

I do fire wood and the barn doors would ge great for that, but when I get dirt and spread it in the yard, the combo gate is great. So I guess its up to you, whatever you use it for should influence your descission.

My trailer will have drop down sides. I dont think loading by hand will be an issue.

Mine is a combo (top/bottom hinge) The only time I use the chains is when I am using the gate to spread gravel. and I almost never do that. I am better with the kubota so I just dump is and spread it out with the tractor.

I am not sure who makes yours or how strong the gate is.... but

I have dumped tons and tons of debris with the gate down no chains.

It's a camsuperline. I hear you on the just dumping and spreading with machine. I can always just take the gate off too. Probably heavy though. 7' wide trailer.

I have the combo barn doors and top hinged gate. In two years I have yet to use the hinged gate with the chains - as mentioned by JManatee2 I prefer Kubota seat time for spreading.

Maybe since yours is a deckover it will be high enough with a bottom hinged gate to dump debris but I would be concerned about the long term effects of dumping over/across a 7' wide gate. I have seen lots of bowed pickup tailgates over the years so personally I would go with the barn doors. You will also have to drive a little further forward each time you dump in order to get everything out of the trailer with the extra lenth of the bottom hinged door.

I have added two 2x12 timbers to the sides of my dumper which gives me a little over 4' of height inside the box. I haul as much construction debris and brush as I do dirt so I also made a set of racks that bring up the hieght of my rear barn doors to match the sides. Wtih the barn doors these just stay on the doors and swing to the side. If you have the tailgate design I guess you could add a rack but I think you would have to lift it off everytime you dumped.

The only issue I have had with the barn doors is you have to make sure they are secured before dumping. If you have a new helper make sure they know the correct procedure as the door will hit the grouond as the trailer dumps if it is not secured.

I am also looking for a 14 ft dump trailer at least 7 ft wide with scissor lift. Whats better place for the controls under the trailer or on the tongue? What kind of prices? I am sseing in the high 6s for a pull behind. I plan on loading a tractor in one as a second trailer to haul a smaller tractor with loader.

I did not like the Homesteader. Hawke is elling over my way. Have not seen one yet. They usually sell fast at the dealers. Lawrimore is a good solid brand. We have alot of brands higher than 7 k.

The best place for the controls, pump, and battery is in a weatherproof box on the tongue. A tray for straps and chains can go under the dump itself.

And the hydraulic components are expensive so I have decided to mount the controls onto a small platform along with the battery and I will slide it into my truck bed when I am ready to make deliveries. Otherwise it will be kept in my garage on a wheeled platform and available to run pressed and other toys I have yet to make. This way my trailer can still be run off my tractors hydraulics and my hydraulic components wont be left out in the elements to rust and such. How did the remote setup workout? I do like your trailer. Are they more affordable since they don't come with all the pump and battery and so forth? The big question I have is how does it do on the road behind your truck? I think that would work for me as I typically don't travel far to get firewood. I saw one for sale recently. Regular dump trailers are expensive. I wish I wouldn't have sold mine. But I wasn't using it much and needed the money. If I could pick up one reasonably that might work. So how does tha Pronovost handle on the road?

I see this is an old topic but dump trailer questions come up often.
I looked at several brands before buying. Bri-Mar was one that I looked at. They looked to be good but not the best. Probably good enough for what most would need. I ended up buying a B&B (Behnke) trailer. After comparing several brands I could see the features on the B&B were thought out better, and it was built better and stronger. It was also the most expensive of all the brands I looked at but IMO it offered the best value as I doubt I'll ever need to replace it. The one thing I don't like is the ramps are stored under the bed. A real PITA to get to but most dumpers aren't used to haul tractors. The gate on the B&B is convertible from barn doors to bottom hinged, top hinged or removable. The controls are stored in the box on the tongue with the pump and the battery. The lockable box is big enough to hold ratchet straps, a tarp and hold down straps, my hitch, and some chains. Mine is a 14', 14K, tag-a-long. I bought mine from dealer stock. I've had it 8 years. I've towed it everywhere from western Iowa to western New York. If I had it to do over again the only thing I'd get different is I'd order one with 3' sides.

Well, it has no brakes so I don't haul anything very heavy in it on the road, even though around town I think it would do fine. No point to risking injury or fine to make a point. Other wise I really like the setup.

I have had the same EZ Dumper drop down sides for over 15 years and I have used it hard and it still works great. it is #10,000 lb. It was the only one I found that had dual lift rams which are really great if you are dumping on a slope, no binding or twisting. I don't know if they still exist or make this model.
