Dump trailer prices

My F-750 will legally haul 8-9 tons but it’ll handle 12 no problem.

When you add the weight of the truck to the 12 ton, you might be overloading the 23k rear axle. What I see with the 6 wheeler dumps is the short 9' bed being loaded with a 11' bucket. Then in order to get 8 yards of clinkers you are stacked way above the bed sides. Like this real nice 6500 GM. When the loader was done, the pyramid pile was sluffing off over the tail gate.

My 16,000 pound trailer legally hauls 6 tons and it’s not very accepting of overloads and still capable of dumping. It’ll also get you stuck quick. The 17.5 tires don’t off-road good. My F-750 will legally haul 8-9 tons but it’ll handle 12 no problem. And without the dump truck I’d have nothing to pull the 16,000 pound trailer. I wouldn’t say the trailer is significantly lower maintenance either.
Ahh but maintenance is only part of the equation. Insurance and registration is where the trailer is MUCH cheaper.
So you think a truck, with an engine, transmission, rear differential, fuel system, steering system, cab, complex electrical system and on and on is cheaper to maintain than a trailer???? o_O
I got to get ahold of the trucks your driving, sounds like utopia to me!

Unless you’re pulling the dump trailer with a horse you have all of those cost anyway. And I heard horses are pretty expensive so probably better to keep paying tags and insurance on the truck.

As far as trailer costs, the ones I’ve been watching have come down, from their peak. Still high, but going the right direction.

In 2018, I paid $8,500, for my well-optioned Diamond C 24 LPD. I ordered it and waited a little over two months to get it. Tokay, the same trailer has an MSRP of around $15,000 and is around a six month wait. They are selling at or close to +/- MSRP, with a line of buyers. A few months ago, I saw new trailers like mine selling at $17,000. I was tempted to sell, but use mine commercially and my trailer is my biggest money maker. No sense selling just to move all the profit of selling high to the next trailer.

In January, I about bought a 32’ dual tandem gooseneck. I was looking at a few brands and had my choice between $9,000 and $10,000. The “budget” brands were between $6,000 and $7,000. In March, trailer prices jumped about $4,000; across the board. By June, it was full stupid. The same trailer I passed on, at $9,500, sold at $18,000. I decided to look back at used. Comparable trailers that were serviceable, but thirty years old were selling immediately, for $8,000. At $10,000, they still sold within 24 hours.

In summer of 2019, the shop bought a highly customized 40k GVWR Diamond C flatbed. After thousands, in options, it came in under 20,000. That same trailer, today, is between $40,000 and $50,000.

Ok so a guy owns a 3/4 ton truck.
He wants a dump truck or a dump trailer
Are you saying it’s the same total cost of ownership if he buys a dump truck versus a dump trailer?
Im sorry, but that’s NOT the same cost. A dump truck costs way more to own than a dump trailer.
Literally everyone on this forum already owns a pickup truck. Virtually nobody only owns a dump truck and uses it as their only vehicle.

And a dump trailer works well for those people. But for anyone wanting to do everyday work a dump truck is far better.

Ok sure, but that’s a different subject than cost of ownership

But if you have a dump truck for heavy work you don’t need to daily drive a 3/4 ton diesel and could cut that expense.

Side note: Very few people who drive a 3/4 ton diesel “need” it. A lot never do anything truck related.

Blame Global Warming like everyone else. Check out JDJ Trailers in Waterdown Ontario Canada. They ship to US I believe.

steel prices dude. My rates have over doubled because of the cost of steel.

Like all products made with steel trailers have shot up in price. If you are not aware of it the price from the mill for steel has risen at least three fold in the past year. I'm sure it will come back down as supply increases and demand tapers from customers not being willing to buy at today's prices. Ultimately someone who buys at these prices will take a hit as new stuff falls 30 to 50% from today's market back to close to where it was pre-price rise.

For me the right solution is a one ton dually and trailers. I cannot haul my fifth wheel camper or the GN I use to haul my antique truck with a dump truck, but I can use the dump trailer for multiple purposes such as hauling the BX or just as a utility trailer. I find trailers to generally be a PIA because of tire and maintenance issues, but I can't beat the versatility or cost effectiveness. Plus here in VA you only pay a one time fee to register them, so the only annual cost is the $20.00 PIA state safety inspection and any insurance you choose to carry.

We looked at a new one last month. Decided to keep what we have.

I get the steel prices & all, but I think there’s some “fuzzy math” helping the prices go even higher.

Appalachian no longer offering colors on trailers.
Black only

As in all transactions if the buyer is willing to pay the asking price the seller is perfectly willing to take it. Does "irrational exuberance" ring a bell?

Yeah, but as was pointed out by another poster, you feel for the guy that pays today’s high prices, then the price drops back down. He’s under water.
