Need some collective brain power / experience......

I'm thinking about getting a 6x12 "U-Dump" trailer (battery operated hydro pump w/single cylinder) to help move lots of rocks and dirt this coming spring.....My problem is that I can't see how I can relatively easily hitch it to the rear of my tractor (L39) with the backhoe attached. I envision filling the trailer with the loader/backhoe then pulling it about 1000 yards and dumping it. -Has anybody seen a TLB pulling a trailer of some kind with the hoe attached? I don't want to have to put a ball on a quick attach implement on the front, then have to drive in reverse pulling the trailer with the loader /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

What about the fact that the L39 will have a quick attach hoe bucket.....Maybe I could have something fabricated that attaches to the hoe quick attach (modified old bucket) and pull it by the dipper stick? But, wouldn't the up and down movement of the tractor as it traverses the cut up earth lift and throw around the trailer??? Maybe the fact that the trailer's tongue is so far away from the tractor's rear axel will amplify the movements and cause problems.....

Ideas anybody? All welcome.

Jim,

Is a 2nd vehicle to tow the trailer an option?
I'm just wondering if it would be cumbersome to load the trailer then connect/dump/disconnect all the time.

Im in agreement with Brian. Ive got a dump truck so this isnt an issue but Ive used my Jeep to pull the utility trailer around the yard collecting wood and so forth.
Before I got an actual "tractor" I used to call my Wrangler a tractor because I often used it to do things around the yard like pull the trailer and pull trees out and winch all kinds of stuff around.

I was thinking of doing the same thing but on a (much) smaller scale with my BX23 - best solution I could dream up was some sort of hitch setup that hung off the back of the backhoe unit that I could attach the trailer to. You also need to have a trailer that will stay stable when it is disconnected from the tractor - probably means 4 wheels and tongue jack. Unless you use one of the farm type wagons where the wheels are pushed out to the four corners - and I don't think you can tow those on public roads.
The other solution I found that I thought was pretty cool were the small tracked dumps Yanmar and Kubota make - they exceed my budget and my real needs on my (small) property but they might be worth looking into - check out

The problem is that the place will be a mess. A pick-up or another smaller vechicle won't be able to deal with the slop and pulling thousands of pounds of dirt. It would simply bury itself.

I used to move my empty trailer around the equipment yard with the backhoe by hooking the trailer breakaway chains over the bucket and pulling it. I wouldn't use those chains to haul a loaded trailer because the way they fasten to the trailer isn't designed to take the vertical load. I'd try something like putting a bar or a plate under the two sides of the trailer frame right behind the ball hitch and run a piece of chain around it. Suspend the bucket over the hitch, wrap the chain over the bucket and fasten the ends together either with a hook or a bolt, then lift the tongue with the backhoe and pull the trailer. My trailer jack was far enough back that it didn't get destroyed by the bucket. If yours is in the way, you might need plan B.

put a hitch on the front of the tractor

like this

here's a pic from behind.

were still working on the brush bar and a removable chain box.

i'll be using it for several things including an electric winch

Will you have some need for the trailer when you are done with this clearing? If not, I'd recommend renting a dump truck OR renting a larger tractor/FEL to move the material.

I've not had to move dirt very far (front to back yard mostly), but it is time consuming. Going 1000 yards is a lot! If I could find a large FEL to rent reasonably, I think I'd go that route.

Best wishes,
ron
