Another word that I am weird about is "ya'll". If I am around southerners or other country folk, it doesn't bother me as it seems to just be part of the culture. (I grew up in the country but not that far out). If I hear some city "hoodlum" say it I feel like stabbing them in the eyeball.

I'd expect a city hoodlum would more likely call u sweetie, or stab u in the eyeball, first. Depends on the city.

Well, they may shoot at me, but I wouldn't worry about that since they wouldn't hit me. I would be more concerned for the little girl riding her bike 3 blocks away.

Wait, now I'm confused. R we talking about hoodlums? Or law enforcement???

I'm pretty sure the hoodlum would be accurate. More practice, improves accuracy.

I use to use the word Dude all the time when I was younger and still use it with younger people, someone my age or older it's either their name if I know or Sir/mam

If the worst thing in my life is being called dude then I'll count my blessings and get on with my life. It's just a slang term that's thrown around today and most don't mean disrespect using it.

I'm with you on that. I mean, what's the big deal? It's just today's "pal", "mac", "buddy", etc.
I doubt any disrespect was meant.

I call everybody else "Sir" or "Ma'am". Even when talking to friends, I will say "Yes Sir" or "Yes Ma'am". In retrospect, I really think that one's manners come from the illustrations that one's parents instill in their children. BTW, I am 61 years old and grew up in the 60's.

Must be a southern thing. I'm the same age you are, and I don't recall anyone using "sir" or "maam" growing up. Occasionally now I'll hear it, usually in a store.

A old childhood friend of mine lives in a town in Florida that's primarily retirees. He regularly addresses old ladies as "dear" or "sweetheart". If I were them, I'd be somewhat offended by either of those terms from a stranger, but it seems to be acceptable there.

Speaking of southern "manners", the last time I was down south I was in a restaurant where everyone was sweet as pie until they heard me speak with a northern accent. At that point the charm got turned right off, my order was sort of thrown at me. So much for respect.

I am a Southerner, a Georgian born and bred....Ya'll come down here and you will experience Southern Hospitality, even if you have a Yankee accent...Would I be treated the same way in NH...?

For your enjoyment...Beautiful Dixie
